Fan ticking?

Post by thesmileyone » Fri Feb 15, 2019 5:54 am

Got my corsair fans connected up using a PWM Y adaptor.

The problem is they tick... say I set 30% in Speedfan all is good, 5 mins later they start ticking. Adjust the speed to 35% in Speedfan, all good, 5 mins later they start ticking. Slow the speed down to 30% again...all good...5 mins later they start ticking.

I don't understand it?

Is it just cheap shit fans? The whole case was £80 so it stands to reason that 2 fans that come with it must be pretty crap given that Noctuas are £15-£30 EACH.

I need to use them for a few months before I upgrade to A12x25's all round.

Thanks

PWM fans tend to tick (except at 100%). Shit fans? Yes. Perhaps PWM is the shit... Those 5 mins I don't understand either.

The controller is in the fan. All the ticking is in the fan.

I think it might be the fan controller.

Permanently fixed...by giving the top of the case a light tap.

Not sure what occured but not complaining!

PC silent at 30% on every fan.

Idle temps
CPU 38C

1060 6GB 39C

Load temps (tbc)

My guess would be something resonating.

I have 4 mechanical HDDs (and one SSD) in my computer. All HDDs are mounted in a rubber feeted holder and rubber inserts around their screws (Lian-Li DK-04) - and spin down if not in use. But last week one of the HDD started to resonate trough something ... in a hideous way!

I just had to open the case (which is kind of labor-some in this case), I wiggled the HDD, and determined it musts be one of the cables leaning to ... something and conducting the vibration into the case. I couldn't determine what it is. In the end I just re-routed the cables and it went away, for the time being.

Bottom line: Hope it doesn't return. Sometimes resonating stuff can be a real pain to diagnose! It could be, for example, a cable (connector housing?) leaning to the fan casing and the case, possibly "pinched" between hard surfaces.

It keeps returning intermittently.

I have ordered via proof of ownership, some fan clips from Noctua to replace the cable tie I am using now.

I also want to buy some rubber screws that come with the £5 antec fans. In my experience the silicon screws that bend from Noctua don't work well for case fans but these rubber screws Antec ship don't vibrate at all.

At some point I will upgrade to all round a12x25's.

There is maybe a problem in the bearing.
