Thermalright slk-900 will it take a 92mm fan on a P4 board?

Post by Hellspawn » Thu Feb 20, 2003 12:46 pm

Was just reading one of the reviews about the SLK900U and it mentioned that on a P4 board you can't use a 92mm fan, this is the only review that has mentioned this fact. Anyone out there have a 92mm fan on this item ON a p4 board and have it fit correctly?

I can't quite figure out why it wouldn't fit on with 92mm fan unless you have some wierd riser card right next CPU. Other than that, if it doesn't fit with 92mm fan, it probably doesn't fit at all just as heatsink. (Now, was it those dual power stuff board from Gigabyte? Definitely possibility than from what I can see)

Here's the review; upon further reading they are saying that a 92mm won't fit when using the standard p4 mounting..??

I don't see why it will not fit either, maybe the retention module is in the way?

I just posted this same question in MikeC's Article Discussion about the SLK-900 review. I remember reading (somewhere) that the fan clips won't clear the black plastic P4 heatsink bracket. I was asking for clarification of this im my question to MikeC.

OK, I checked on this:
1) the wire clips for the 92mm fan "splay up" to the fan so that they do get in the way of the clips.
2) it is still possible to get the clips on with a little pushing & shoving & manipulation of the wire clips... but probably not once the mobo is in the case, unless the PSU gets moved out of the way. Even then it might be tough.
3) There is another simple way of getting the 92mm fan to stay on. Use flexible wire instead, and the holes that are higher up on the fin. A thin solid length of bare wire can be threaded the holes in the fins, routed through 2 mounting holes on the fan and the ends twisted tight together. Ditto the other side. It would be very much like using the provided wire clips.

PHOTO & details added in PS at end of review article.

Mike is right. The standard clips get in the way. But unless you have a real love for these clips just install the alternate set that comes with the heat sync. The standard clips will be unused anyway so why not use the alternate ones. I did this and the 92 mm fan fit perfectly.

BTW, thanks to Mike for the tip on SVCompucycle. I went there yesterday to get the heatsync. it is nice to be able to walk in and pickup stuff like this.
