ok,

I was looking for a quiet drive, same as you lot.

I bought :

Seagate barracuda 40gb ST340016A
Diamondmax Plus 8 30gb 6E030L0
Diamondmax Plus 9 120gb 6Y120L0

Barracuda 40gb : Pretty darn quiet.

Diamondmax 30gb: it has a small whine, any whine is bad

Diamondmax 120gb: no whine at all but the daddy of all grinds beffore setting to quiet using AMSET, small vibration too.

I ended up using the 120gb maxtor as its as quiet if not quieter than the cuda 40gb. The grind and vibration was sorted by suspending the drive.

It was worth suspending etc above using the cuda 40gb simply because of the capacity.

are those rubber bands? If they are I would be careful because rubberbands dont last forever, and when stretched, or heated they will last ever shorter.

Try small bungie cords instead. Those rubber bands will go fast.

Grounding the drives to the bracket isn't necessary. They're already grounded via both the power connection and the IDE. If there is an internal short one of 42 ground wires in those cables will carry it. The only protection you lose by not having it grounded to the case is protection against an external short, such as touching the casing of the drive with a live electrical line. And when was the last time that happened?

And when was the last time you had a live electrical line exposed inside your machine, and why???

What about all that fuss w/ static building up in IBM drives? Reported at the bottom of this page.

Hmm... one wonders if this is a problem with those IBM drives or hard drives in general. If the problem is universal, then a lot of us folks who suspend our drives will run into the same problem.

Considering the track record of IBM drives I wonder if that's really true, or just some engineering scapegoating 8)

If it takes months for the static charge to build up to dangerous levels I don't see why the static charge wouldn't be dissapated thru the humidity in the air. Granted, in a server where the drive spins 24/7 for months the static buildup "may" gradually out weigh the discharge. But in a desktop environment where the disk is spun down occasionally the static would discharge fairly quickly to the air during the downtime.

But if it'll help you sleep better at night, run a wire from the drive shell to the bracket. (and hang some garlic in there for good measure too)

Has any one tried the AV decoupling mounts from RS (www.rswww.com) part no. 386-7660?[/img]
