The new Barracuda drives with 80gb/platter seem to now be shipping.

According to a Seagate data sheet, these drives may NOT have the Seashield; something that has been attributed in part to the silence of these drives.. Can anyone confirm or deny this with knowledge?

From what I've read, there's no Seashield. But if you look at the specs between the different drive series, the db on the 7200.7 drives are only a couple db higher than the Cuda IV drives. How were they able to do this? The 7200.7 datasheet does say "Inaudible acoustics with sound barrier technology (SBT), uncluding the Seagate exclusive SoftSonic motor". Is this the same motor used in the Barracuda IVs?

I should be receiving my 7200.7 drive tomorrow and will take pictures. I hope to have some form of comparison since I have a 40GB IV on hand.

One guy on the storagereview forum noted that he feels the 7200.7 drive runs much cooler than the Cuda IVs.

There's a guy over at Anandtech who got one and says it's noticeably louder than a 40GB Barracuda IV. FWIW.

The Seagate data sheet does not say SeaShield on it, but does say SeaShell packaging and data defense. I think it is the same, they just do not use the word SeaShield

I used PriceGrabber. To save you a little typing, just click here for 7200.7 drives. :)

I ordered the Seagate 80GB ATA100 Barracuda 7200.7 drive. I ordered it from Titan Logic, and they shipped the same day I ordered. I haven't used them before, though. It cost me $108 out the door. I could have saved $2 if I ordered from eCOST.com, but they don't appear to have them in stock.

im a little confused, is the 7200.7 a different drive from both the baracuda IV and baracuda V?

yes the 7200.7 is a newer line than the Barracuda V.

The 7200.7 has 80gb platters (so two full platters = 160gb top range for the 7200.7 series), the V has 60gb platters, and of course the IV had 40gb platters.

I've been patiently waiting for SATA versions of either the V or 7200.7 line to hit the retail channels, and it looks like I'll be waiting a bit more.

Which is fine, I can wait out longer.

I saw a review of the serial version of the barracuda V(? i think) versus the normal ide version and there was no difference eccept the cable is smaller. I cant remeber where I saw it, maybe storagereview.com?

Sorry, wrong.

The "SeaShell" is the clear plastic container Seagate drives come in.

I've had my 7200.7 for 2 days now. I'm just busy with other stuff. I hope to test drive it tonight.
