Nexus NX-4090 - Recommended!

Post by acaurora » Mon Jul 12, 2004 2:11 pm

After a few months of owning a Super Silencer 460 W Revision A3 (not the one MikeC reviewed a while ago with the Yate Loon fan, that supposedly is a different version that I have yet to see in stores. Do you know when they'll be out, Mike?), I have decided to look for a quieter PSU. I believe that my unit probably went bad, or my computer's load/setup was just weird. The fan would create a type of whine at around 1725 RPM, which, unfortunately, was the fan speed that it would hover around. Looking into other PSUs, I decided to look into the Nexus NX-4090, and I am happy to say, it doesn't disappoint. The fan, while large @ 120mm, is very quiet, with only a very low clattery kind of noise, only audible with your ear placed within several inches of the exhaust. My only gripe is that there are too few connectors for users with many peripherals, and that the cables are just barely long enough -- I had to use a splitter because the molex connectors could not reach my HDDs in the HDD rack on my BQE. As the chart on Nexus' website shows, the ramping is extended compared to previous models, thus meaning it will stay quieter at the same loads. I think this unit definitely deserves a closer look, and thus have contacted endpcnoise.com to see if they can send a sample for SPCR to review :P

Just telling the good news, this is a good PSU!

As above, eventually decided to get the Nexus last week and very impressed with this.

I did have to buy an extra 3way splitter and an extra floppy power unit (audigy drive) But it was worth it in the end as my noise has gone right down.
Going to get a Vantec fan controller and my quiet system is complete.

I think you misread the Seasonic Revisited article. The YL fan is in the Tornado.

Internally, the only obvious change is the addition of that little PCB fan controller circuit, which looks identical to the one in the Super Tornado 300 sample.
Well I have been proven wrong. The mini-PCB is the only change for the Super Silencers. Is there anything else you want to disprove me on?

It's fine. I've had a bad day to boot, so that probably is why I sound a little crabby.

Hey,

Are you getting a whine with this Nexus 4090 + 9800XT? Just read that you had issues with the Seasonic. What are you cooling your 9800XT with?

I dont have any whine with my 9800 XT and the Nexus NX-4090. I am using the stock cooler that came with my 9800 XT, which, is an ASUS cooling solution w/2 fans.

Damn, I just got a quote from a local store for the 4090. $160 + tax CAD. So expensive!

Acaurora - does your NX-4090 ramp up when playing games? My NX-3500 is great at idle, but dreadful noise-wise when playing Thief 3 or Far Cry with my 9800XT Ultimate.

The NX-3500 does do a great job at handling the CPU temp @ 52C max. (using a Heatlane Zen NCU-2000 and Nexus 120mm case fan). Much better than my Enermax 465P @ 60C or Yesico FL420ATX(T) fanless @ 66C.

I d not use mine anymore - its on its way to Mike. I do not recall it ramping up tho in games - why does it matter - you're gunna have tons of game noise anyway :)

Cool, glad we're going to see a review! But why didn't you keep it? Have you found something better?

the nexus powersupply is made by fortron/source if memory serves correct, just with a different fan.

Short cables and lack of connectors alos plauges my 300W fortron.

Why didn't I keep it? Because my SS460W A3 w/L1A, which I had before the Nexus, had a higher power rating, and I chose to keep the SS because of any possible future upgrades that might require the additional 60W.

Short cables/lack of connectors is also evident on the NX-4090, if I haven't already pointed that out.
