New quiet PC build project

Post by sdan » Mon Aug 02, 2004 12:47 pm

Please critique my choises for Case, MB, and CPU for my new computer:

Case/Power Supply - Antec 3700BQE (Black Quiet Edition) case Motherboard - Intel Bonanza (D875PBZ)
CPU - Intel Pentium 4 3.0C 800MHz bus 512Kb cache

Is this a good combination?

And a Zalman 7000 ALCu to cool your processor would round it off nicely.

Make sure that processor is a Northwood, not Prescott (is that what the C in 3.0C means?). Also, if you plan to do any overclocking, you'll want a nicer board than the Intel one. I recommend the Asus P4P800 series.

I got a 3700BQE thinking that it would be really quiet, but I ended up replacing the PSU with a Seasonic rev A3. The stock PSU starts out quiet, but the thermally-controlled fan ramps up to a fairly high speed pretty eagerly under load and it is definitely NOT quiet in this state.

Yes I know you can't overclock an intel motherboard. I thought about that when choosing, and I decided that i don't want to monkey with it anyways. for the applications i'll be running, processor speed is only a secondary concern. realistically, i could get by with a 1.5GHz processor so long as the bus speed, mem speed, and hd speeds were not effected. i'll be running raid 0 on 2 160GB drives. main application i'll use will be adobe audition which is an audio recording/mixing program.
