Perf Diff? : AMD64 2700+ Mobile vs. Amd Athlon XP2500+

Hello,

I currently have an Athlon 2500+ and I'm getting this itch to go 64bit. Problem is, my budget was suddenly constrained (mom's machine barfed...) Net, I only really have ~$300 for my upgrade..

Here's my question, how much difference in performance will there be between an AMD64 2700+ Mobile and my current setup? The 64 bit chip would be clocked at 1.6GHZ vs. the 1.883 GHZ XP chip.

As I can only afford a new motherboard and chip, my AMD64 setup would need to be using the same DDR333 RAM I have in my XP box. Will this totally cripple the performance of the AMD64?

EDIT: Found this thread that mentions I should be fine with using my existing RAM: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=15653

Thanks!
KF

I'd lean towards the A64 if you're going for a purely performance aspect. I think that the on-chip memory controller contributes to more of the performance than the clock does.

It's a tougher call though if you're examining it from an underclocking/undervolting low power perspective.
