SATA barracuda v -- too hot to touch

got two barracuda V SATA in a mirror array on a MSI k7n2g-ilsr motherboard. after installing windows these drives were very very hot. the back of them, where the cords plug in, was too hot to touch. im trying more case fans. . . but now my 'system temp' is at like 97 degrees F. thats funny because my CPU temp is 100 F.

there are two of the drives. they work perfectly. they are fast and quiet and nice. they just run REALLY HOT.

improved airflow has helped a lot, now i can touch them. i also rubber-banded an old piece of copper to the back of one and it seems to help a little bit too. but wtf?

does anyone else have these and how hot are yours?

Those tempertures you mentioned are not really that high, athlon boards do have slightly higher system and cpu temps.

All you need is probably a low voltage fan directly blowing across the two drives to cool them down. Get a monitoring program and see what the temps are for the two hard disk. Below 50C is okay (manafacturer recommends max of 55C approx).

Dtemp also monitors HD temps, I can't find the link yet when I do I will post.

Dtemp's easier than Speedfan, runs from the ".exe" with no install needed.

Maybe the high temps is why Seagate left the "Seashield" off of these drives!

Cuda V's have SMART information that is read by the system board and can be accessed via Windows using the right software (see other posts above). You don't need special hardware -- the drive already contains all the hardware you need.

Seagates are alot hotter on the sides than the top, try sticking heatsinks there instead of the top and bottom.
