Noise Control Stealth - Ultimate Silent Case?

Post by Pontiac » Mon Mar 31, 2003 12:06 pm

I've been considering drastic measures to cut the noise down from my PC, hopefully completely. It is very annoying - I sleep in the same small room as it. On searching for sound insulated cases, I came across seemingly the ultimate, and certainly one of the most expensive, pre-built commercially available cases. A review is here http://www.ocprices.com/index.php?rev_i ... on=reviews

What very much interests me is the innovative and unique "whisper box" available that sticks onto the back. As the reviewer says, I imagine the bulk of noise coming out of an insulated case comes out of the unpadded rear. This seemingly solves the problem.

Any comments?

The "whisper box" is certainly a good idea. You can purchase something similar here:

As for this being the ultimate pre-built, I'd say no way because it uses 80mm case fans. A full tower like this has no excuse for not using 120mm fans.

Read my D8000 quiet case project review. Not only is it a mid tower, but it also uses two 120mm fans.

QuietPC will soon be selling some cases with the awesome AcoutiPack material pre-installed. It also looks like they will be offering a similar case as the D8000(based on LX-6A19)

Here is a list of mid tower cases with 120mm fans

Hello:

Those fan grills couldn't be much more restrictive if they tried!! Yucky pitooy! They may be "quiet" because they don't pass much air...

Oh wow, you are right. Those have got to be the worst I've seen.

Frankly I wouldn't think that whisper box is even safe......The P/S vents directly against a solid back wall, forcing the air to make a 90 degree turn, and vent out the bottom. Even if it vented out the top, the effect would be the same......the P/S temp will go up considerably.

I've seen similar setups before...sure they quiet things down, but at the cost of much higher temps. You could try the effect out on your own case with the use of a cardboard DIY "whisper box". Be careful.
