nForce4 SLI "Intel Edition" chipset released

Post by Slaugh » Tue Apr 05, 2005 11:32 pm

nVidia has officially anounced their new nForce4 SLI Intel Edition chipset for Intel processors.
Designed for desktop PCs and motherboards based on Intel Pentium 4 processors for Socket 775, including the upcoming dual-core Intel Pentium processor Extreme Edition and Pentium D processors, NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Intel Edition MCPs are the first to support NVIDIA SLI technology—the ability to combine the rendering power of two graphics cards in a single system, resulting in increased performance and unparalleled game play.
There are some good articles about this new chipset on the Internet:
Right now, I know EPoX, ABit and Gigabyte have upcoming boards using this chipset:

For those who love details, here's the layout of this new chipset:

Hello:

Wait -- a HyperTransport bus on an Intel chipset?

The fact that a nForce4 IE is better performing than Intel chipsets, even in non-SLI mode, shows again that technological progress can he held back by pure marketing decisions. I suppose that if nVidia wouldn't have developed SLI (which, BTW, isn't such a sophisticated technology, just passing of digital video data through the SLI connector and managing the workloads in the driver), Intel wouldn't have agreed to the bus licensing...

I don't know where that HyperTransport came from, but nVidia's own graphic doesn't say HyperTransport between the CPU and the SPP.

ilh, you are right: of course there is no HT between the CPU and the northbridge. That's the piece of hardware interconnect for which nVidia needed Intel's bus license.
