Coolest mid-pack performance CPU

Post by sappy » Thu May 05, 2005 1:52 am

Hello, I'd like some recommendations for the coolest running not hugely powerful (2500-3000ish would do fine) CPU. I have as my options P4's, Celerons, Athlon XP/64 and Sempron... but NOT the Athlon Mobile, which I can't buy from the shop I like to use. I'd also like you to recommend me a cooler as well. I'll be using an Antec Aria, so case clearance with the CPU cooler is a critical point. Thanks

Oh yeah I forgot to say that I haven't decided on the MB yet, my CPU choice will dictate that.

Athlon64 3000+ Socket 939, either in Winchester or Venice version (i.e. 90nm).

I agree with Mongobilly, Athlon 64 3000+ on Socket 939. If you want slightly lower cost then the socket 754 with a Sempron 3000+ is also a good buy.

It maybe not as future proof as 939 but certainly cheaper and with most of the performance.

Agree with above posters, my Winnie 3000+ Socket 939 A64 runs very cool. I use a Cooler Master ATC 620 microATX case and cut a 120mm hole above the CPU and put a 120mm fan grill in black to cover the hole. The heat sink I use is the Thermalright XP90 with a Panaflo L1BX 92mm fan sucking air off the heat sink and blowing straight up out of the 120mm vent. My idle temps are 33C with the fan running a 952 RPM. When 100% loaded down for an hour, the temp jumps to 45C with the fan speed increasing to 1500 RPM. Gotta love those Cool and Quiet Mobos! 8)
