Has anyone compared the noise of the IBM GXP60 harddrive with any other drives, say Seagates? I have the IBM now but I recently noticed its noise.

Haven't got any 60s, but do have 75s. They are MUCH noiser than 'cudas, especially in the highs. 'cudas hardly have any whine at all; the IBMs have lots. Sek noise can be dramatically reduced with software - check under links/software.

I second Mike on the whine part of IBM's... it's horrible!

I bought a pair of IBM 60GXPs just a short while before discovering the joys of silent computing; they'd be quite acceptable if not for that infernal high-pitched whine.

foam does do wonders with high freq noise -- you just have to make sure the temp doesn't rise as a result, foam being not only a sonic insulator, but also thermal.

I just tried the IBM Drive Feature software, and dramatic is certainly the right word -- the seek noise is no longer audible. Access seems a bit slower though. Thanks again.
update: unfortunately I've had to disable the acoustic management and revert to the original setting since it causes crashing with some disk-intense software.
