We broke 100!

Post by tragus » Wed Apr 30, 2003 1:10 pm

According to the official Folding@Home stats page (see http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/searchteamstats ), sometime before 5:07 EST, SilentPCReview Folding@Home team entered the top 100 folding teams. As a tribute to all of the team who contributed their cycles, let's celebrate with 3 minutes of silence!

...and we'll keep climbing through the ranks!!!

Post by NeilBlanchard » Wed Apr 30, 2003 7:30 pm

Hello:

It looks like pretty "clear sailing' all the way up to #65! And the "green" teams don't get real dense until the 40's...

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/folding/

Lets hope more people add their silent machines to the team, and let's urge all those who have started contributing to keep it up! :D

[Edit]: By just after midnight EST on April 1st, we got to 99th! We spent a whole 7 hours in 100th place -- then move up! :D

We've now improved to 96th!

Post by NeilBlanchard » Thu May 01, 2003 4:21 am

Hello:

Like I speculated last night, our climb through the stats has not slowed down -- on the official F@H Top 100 Teams chart, we are now at 96th! 8)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but here's the most encouraging thing to me: There is only one team ahead of us in the rankings with fewer WUs completed. How do they assign points? I assume it's the size of the work unit and the time taken to complete said WU. Our high score and low WU count therefore means we are completing more WUs faster than most teams. We are going to go up! :)

This is beginning to be fun. Now that we are in the top 100 I’m going to add a few more machines to my pool. I’m also going to try to get a few of my buddies to join in on the fun for our team. Most of them have high end machines and should be able to help pump out a few 100 points a day. Last Wednesday marked my first week of doing this and I haven’t been watching the team’s numbers before I joined but I have seen some graphs and read the forums it looks like we are climbing rapidly and are destined to make it to the top!

You go here: http://www.statgfx.com/statgfx/getlink.cgi and select Folding@Home and then go through the process.

Yeah, that's the first time anyone has been anywhere near as steep as us. But I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. We got a long way to go yet before we peak, though.

Hmm, I'm thinking we should aim high... say lets take hard ocp's spot! :) they've only got 100 times more points than we do, almost nothing! :)

to make us feel significant, we've done .1% of all of F@H's computing.

hardocp has done 10%...

Yes. And if I could take back the WUs I've given to them, I would. They have 30 times more active users than we have, but I think we're doing damn good for what we have. And I would call [H] up and tell them to watch out, but I don't think they can hear me over their screaming Delta fans.

This is getting out of hand

Post by dukla2000 » Fri May 02, 2003 5:40 am

Does this forum count as some kind of F@H Anonymous?

As far as I can see heading for the top 50 is plausible on our current performance, top 40 looks damn difficult. But I am becoming a stats junky, ensuring each of my units is returned, checking my position, who I am about to pass, tuning my rigs to try get more points/day, checking who SPCR are about to pass (looks like May 4 we may break 90th) ...

More pleasing, when I started mrusso & rusty were each > 17% of the SPCR total. Now us minnows (or latecomers or both) have chipped that away a bit so it looks more like a team than a couple of individuals.

What really goaded me into this is the "do you hear it folding" tag on our team stats page: it was a perfect knife in my ribs cause I had virtually silenced my systems, but only as long as they were doing very little. As someone else has said they may as well be turned off: now they are grafting for their keep, and raised the challenge to keep that silence as well. The dilemma is terrible: I desperately need to do some mods but dont want to stop the PC in case my points count drops!

Well, if you go to this page, you can actually sort the table on different columns by clicking on the colums headers (then click on the re-number rows button to get the rank# correct again). Sorted on week total we are #35, on day total we are #38. The numbers vary throughout the day, I've seen us as high as #31. This means that with the current production we are able to get at least into the top-40, but it would problably take at least a year though I think. (Btw, 3 weeks ago we were somewhere around #55.)
A fun page to watch too is this one: http://www.statsman.org/folding2stats/31574.html . You can do the sorting thing there too. I think it's much more fun to watch who's cranking out the most points. The normal ranking on total score doesn't change that much, while sorting it on day or week totals quickly reflects any changes you made to your system(s).
And I see we have a new leader when it comes to production rate. :)

:D That's really cool that it was the tagline that tempted you into folding. I was wondering if that would have any effect when I wrote that up. yippie!

I guess if you can "hear it folding" then, like you said, you need to push the silencing further. Too bad you need to shut down to do the mods, but it ain't so bad if you get silence in return. What's been your uptime so far? Last time I rebooted was around april 21st.

Well sometimes I run for many days, and sometimes I boot a lot. Right now this box has been running 27 hours: I had to reboot yesterday because it is also my IP server and one of my clients would not connect (and therfore not print which didn't bother me cause it is for my family, but more important it couldn't see the internet to send its results so it was a real emergency :D ) Prior to that it must have run at least 5 days cause I was away on business!

Overall uptime is mostly 24/7 with say 3 minutes out per day per reboot. Mostly I play with fans while things are running, but my urge now is to build a cardboard duct between the cpu fan and the SLK (to stop spillage over the side of the SLK and try get more air aimed at that nice core pyramid, also to decouple the fan from the sink) which will need a few hours out.

Yeah, finally got the second WU! I changed my RAM, and that appears to have stabilized my system, and all this time. Anyways, looks like I'll have to get more RAM or do more testing.

I put two machines at work with F@H. They crunch pretty quick.
