Silenx really silent or is mine defective?

Post by Sanderman » Sun Apr 27, 2003 9:10 pm

I just installed the 14 Db 400 watt SilenX in my 3.06 Athlon and while the fan noise is for all intents and purposes nonexistent it is no way silent. The moment I powered it up I got a high frequency whine exactly like the sound of a color TV when it is on. This is clearly audible 4 to 5 feet away - never mind the glowing reports of putting your ear to the back of the thing to hear any noise at all. Anyone else have an experience like this or is my unit defective?

Joe

LOL
Giving props is one thing but being on someone's nuts is another.

Sammy, praise all you want. Just keep it down to 20 posts.

Digital-It doesn't bother me one bit. I happen to like Peter.

I'd like to know what was up with the whining PSU, but Sanderman hasn't posted here yet since that first one.

So would I. Maybe Digitalix could elaborate on the "buzzing sound"? And while we're at it, I'd also like to know the length of the cables on the Silenx PSU.

Hey digitalix, you're from Camden?

I grew up in Audubon. I don't live there now though. I live in Wilmington now.

Small world.

My SilenX 400watt PSU developed a horrible coil whine to. It got louder and more intense after boot up. Got so bad I had to put my Vantec Stealth back in and it's less annoying, heh.

Great thing is, ExoticPC responded to my problem the same day I sent them an email. Actually called me to. They are having UPS come to my house and pick up the PSU and will be sending me a replacement after the UPS guy has been here. Never had that kind of service before. Especialy from an online store.

Well, one thing I noticed was when no load was being put on the PSU, sometimes it made a slight buzzing sound which disappeared as soon as I connected a hard drive drawing about 1A on each 5v and 12v rails.
How loud would say this noise was and/or is it comparable to some other sound? I'm thinking of possible getting one of these myself and I'd just like to be certain of it's quietness 'ere I do.

I would say, "don't worry", kork. If there's one thing I believe to be true, it's that half the people on this forum are half nuts when it comes to noise. If they say it's the quietest PSU you can buy, then I believe it is the quietets PSU you can buy. No one is as picky as the people who hang out here.
