mike's sandwich idea just made too much sense not to try.. so i went out and purchased 4 1/8" aluminum plates for 10$ from a sheet metal places. i went home and drilled them myself because the place had a 30$ labor charge i wasn't about to pay...

so heres what my situation was.

i had 2 WD 7200 HDs at 20gigs and 80 gigs.. the 20 gig was my priority.. since it sounded like some one had dropped some metal shavings into a blender.

after visiting home depot for some nuts, bolts and this foam tubing stuff used to insulate water pipes (there were two brands.. this cheap plasticy stuff and this dense expensive stuff) i went with the expensive stuff at 4$ for 5 feet or so. at home i went about the creation of my own sandwich.

and following the design almost perfectly i had my first HD silencing sandwich AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!

my ears were so thankful.

my next project was the 80gig

the next day i went out and bought 4 more plates.. dif screws.. and more nuts..

and i came up with this

snazzy eh? hehehe

works perfectly.. and keeps both hard drives seperated by 1" because they share the same 4 posts.

to insulate it from the case i stuck some left over tubing under the screw posts that were sticking out the bottom (you cant see in the photo but i don't feel like taking it out again)

zero vibration from the HDs now..

on to my next task... the PSU fan

hey i'm working my way down untill everything is silent! hehehehe
