I don't see anything in the WD specs to suggest they are, but you could download and run the Hitachi/IBM Feature Tool. It works for drives other than Hitachi/IBM. Worst case: Feature Tool not compatible with your drive.

ack. It's another one of those "automatic install to A:" proggies. I'd love to give this a go, but I haven't owned a floppy drive in years. Is there any img's of this utility available, or any other way for me to install this?

Don't think it will be easy to use the Feature Tool without a floppy: it boots its own OS (so you would need some device, USB disk? you can bott from).

But plan B should be easier - get Disk Temp by Dalesoft - will also (try) enable AAM.

thanks for the link. Dtemp says my WD120jb is capable of AAM, so I guess that answers that question. I couldn't figure out how to get it to enable it though. maybe this just reports properties? Are there any other aam utilities that will work in windows?

In disk temp when you slide to AAM you will see your drive(s) listed. Click on your drive you should get a screen with a slider. FEh is no AAM - slide to 00h for full AAM (or my Fuji only goes down to 80h - AAM is binary but the spex allowed for multiple settings), say set and you should be fine.

I've used the IBM/Hitachi Drive Fitness Tool on IBM, Seagate PATA Cuda V's, and WD SE drives with no problems. Non-IBM drives don't have access to all of the tool's features (like drive temp) but AAM does work.

YMMV, of course.

ehh. I went over this 5 times trying to figure out why I couldn't get it to work. Then I actually read the documentation... (duh):

Ahh well. I'll make a bootable cd. Sucks that there isn't any utilities that will actually run inside windows (xp).

Thanks for the help though-
