How many icons do you keep on your desktop?

Post by Slaugh » Thu Oct 20, 2005 12:14 am

I'm just curious. After looking at some screenshots of Windows and KDE desktops in other threads, I'm wondering how many icons an average SPCR user is keeping on his desktop. Personally, I like to keep my desktop as clean as possible. My start menu is well organized, and I'm using the quicklauch and some shortcut keys for common tasks... But that's my personal taste. Some users like to flood their desktops with icons...

So, how many icons do you normally keep on your desktop?

As few as possible, in other words, the Recycle Bin. I can access almost everything I need very easily via the Start Menu (commonly accessed programs, Internet and Email, My Computer, My Documents, etc.).

i like to click as few things as possible, thus the desktop icons. just the usual my computer, recycle bin, download / document folders, a couple aps (benchmarking stuff since i'm stress-testing my computer now) and my games. more frequently used things are in the quicklaunch. everything else is in the start menu.

None, I hate desktop clutter. All icons are on my taskbar.

Most of my time isn't spent on the desktop, so it doesn't really concern me - it's just a quick dumping ground for files. I always use the quick launch to run common programs.

I voted none, my desktop has 50+ icons but they are all hidden, the start bar is folded down and I use keyboard shortcuts to launch my apps.

So basically my desktop is 3360x1050 of black (2x2005FPW).

I just keep all my desktop icons/dumped files (136 of them) on a third monitor so they're out of the way but easy to get to if I'm doing work on the other 2 monitors :)

I got maybe four to five icons on my desktop, including the default ones, however, even though I prefer a clean desktop I dump many files there, so it's scattered with 40-50 documents. That's a reflection on how it looks in my apartment, tons of papers, books, magazines and stuff lying all over the place. I wish I had time to do something about the mess, I hate it.

Right this second I have 25, but I have 15 permanent icons and 10 that are files/pictures/shortcuts that are being used in a temporary manner and won't be there in a week.
The 15 include files and programs I use often. I rarely see my desktop once I get going but it is where I start from. Several programs also appear on my quickstart menu. I also employ dual monitors...I'd like more

Work around 20+ I have RDC's for all my servers on my desktop, and the recycle bin. I keep my apps I use in the Quick Launch.

Home hardly any, default maybe. I use the Quick Launch extensively at home as well.

On my HTPC, I have exactly one desktop icon - a transparent DVD icon.

On my main workstation, I have exactly one desktop icon - a USB device icon.

On my spare workstation, I have no desktop icons.

 hm. I have a bit to learn, it seems.

I long since "filled up" the desktop (at 1600x1200 it took a while) and have had to resort to turning the icons off.

Every so often I clear things out, but I can never get rid of it all. And I keep adding clutter.

LOTS. 21 in linux, and 45 in windows. But it's not completely disorganized, I have system stuff in the top left corner, games below that, folhers to the right of that, and internet related icons to the right of system ones(only in windows). It's alligned to grid with a line of space between categories, I actually find disorganized desktops quite annoying, and I find it even more annoying when windows feels the need to "arrange" my icons.

I'd be embarrassed to tell you how many I have. I guess I like looking at them.

Many, many years ago I had a desk drawer filled with little toys. I guess these are my new little toys.

usually like 10-15. The default ones, plus browser, IM, adaware, and whatever games or programs I run on a semi regular basis.

Also random files that get dumped there and build up for a day or two before I sort them into their proper folders.

Usually it's lucky 13, a single column on the left side of my 1280x1024 19" LCD heheh, but right now I have some more. I often keep things I am actively working on or have just saved on the desktop, then move them to the right spot later. I only have my browser, "show desktop", and winamp in the quicklaunch. I try to keep stuff off the desktop and out of the tray as much as I can.
