Well, I just got my new Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB drive, to replace out my Maxtor DiamondMax 20GB that I had in a SilentDrive Enclosure (which was highly labeled a "bad thing"). So, I now have this perfectly good DiamondMax 20GB that is lying along the roadside on my journey towards silence.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this unit? I don't have RAID. Could I slave it to the 'cuda? If so, to what purpose? Would having it in the system at all bring unwanted noise into the mix, or are there uses for it which would make any noise until it is accessed? Or should I just try to sell it, or put it in a system for someone else? It's only about a year old, and hasn't seen particularly heavy use, so I'd rather not just label it a loss.

I removed my Maxtor 40GB and I'm currently using it as a paper weight. I'm considering buying a USB or 1394 enclosure for the drive so I can use it to backup my data. That way, I can add and remove it easily and don't have to suffer with the noise for too long. I definitely wouldn't want to keep it in my system, it's too noisey. It'd probably also add heat to the system, which isn't good when you're trying to keep noise low too.

You can use it like backup drive. Setup it to going sleep after 3 minutes.

Well, if you have more than one computer (and they aren't networked) you could get a pair of those removable drive bays and use your HD to move files around -- I use one to shuffle files between my computer at home and the one at my parent's place.

There's also always Ebay, too.

How do you do that? The only option I know is the "turn off harddiscs after n minutes" option but wouldn't that turn off all drives?

To my understanding only the drives that are accessed within those intervals of x minutes are kept online, while the one's that aren't are shut down.
