40mm x 40mm x 10mm power supply fan. Please help!

Post by PIRHANA.A » Fri Oct 18, 2002 4:53 am

I am in the process of putting together a really small PC for use under the TV. It is to replace the Xbox for playing back DVDs as I find it way too noisy.

So far it's made up of:

60GB Barracuda IV hard drive
Teac CD-RW/DVD combo
1000RPM fan for the side of the case.

The most noisy part is the power supply which came with the case. I'm not sure what RPM it runs at. The power supply can output up to 150W.

I need to find the most quiet 40 x 40 x 10mm fan to replace the one in the power supply.

I'd be really greatful for any help.

Hiya, welcome to the forum! :P

Ok, well im not gonna suggest using a normal DVD player, because ill assume there must be some reason why your not doing this? Wont the Teac DVD be a bit noisy, or are you using the drive speed reducer software?

Other than that, Papst make 40mm fans, as do panaflo. But im not sure where you could find them?

Or you could just get an 80mm fan and use a fan adaptor, which i think you would need to make your self. Shouldnt be any back pressure problems at the level of airflow you'll be dealing with :P Would this be possible in the space confinements?

It only accepts a slimline DVD. I have found a Papst fan suitable now at www.pcsilent.de . Thanks for the help. The model number is 412FM if anyone is interested. It's only 19dB!

Sorry, when i said normal DVD player, i meant one like a stand-alone Hi-fi DVD player, ie, not one for a computer...

But nevermind, glad you've found the part you need! Just check the PS doesnt get too hot for a while after you do the swap over.

can u fit something like a 40x40x20MM fan into that case or maybe mount it onto the outside, in my experience, the 40x40x20MM fans are quieter than the 40x40x10 fans, they don't have to spin as fast to gain the same amount of airflow. :) my idea anyway

No it only takes the 10mm. It's a case produced by netbox (www.netbox.co.uk) so I can't fit it externally.

Funny, I have a 40mm x 10mm Sunon, but I'm looking for a 40mm x 20mm fan for my SFF PC PSU whose original 40mm x 20mm fan at 5V is louder than the Sunon -- which I may just use instead of getting a new fan...
