Thank you very much for this review. It seems that my expectations wasn't betrayed.
Price wise (at least in my country) this PSU is a winner in front of S-12 500.

Many should be interested in ST40EF :).

Just keep in mind that the 400W version isn't 80 Plus. You need to go looking specifically for the 80 Plus version to get hold of it.

But they say that ST40EF is 80Plus certified.

So they do. Silverstone wasn't marketing it that way, so I assumed it wasn't (there's a non-80-plus 500W version). Guess I'm wrong.

With all these facts at hand, it seems like the 400W-model is the one that should have been tested instead. Perhaps a future review?

Um, is there any reason to suppose that the the 400W would be acoustically any different than the 500W (ie different PCB/heatsinks/fan)? AFAIAA SPCR has to make do with the models it is given to review, so unless Silverstone is feeling really generous we will not see a review of the 400W (also editorial time is limited, other big projects going on like fan roundup, CPU power survey update).

If we have in mind that 400W model has a medium ADDA fan, and if we suppose that both PSU have same fan controller, I guess that 400W model should be quieter than his big brother.

I am currently modifying an Enhance ENP-5150GH for water cooling, yes, water cooling the mosfets and diode packs. The enp-5150GH is VERY similar in layout and looks to the ST50EF-Plus

The ENP-5150GH uses 60amp diode packs on all three main secondaries, but does not have true split 12v rails, just a simple bus link allowing voltage drop measurements for current limiting. Still I think its the best power supply I have had apart as far as parts quality goes for the price by a long shot.

In another thread the van voltage became a topic of discussion for this PS. I thought I'd cross post this table here.

I though it was interesting that Seasonic switched to the high speed fan for the 650w version as seen here http://www.silentpcreview.com/article656-page3.html

You may also notice I edited the tables above to include the 550+ and 650+ for comparison. The S12 500, 600, and 550+ all use the same medium speed fan but the 550+ has a different fan controller. The 650+ has the higher speed fan but apparently a differnently programmed fan controller than what you see for the 550+ as they are each quieter at some speeds, proving surprisingly or not that a higher speed fan can be used to keep a PSU quieter if the fan controller is setup properly.
