I think I finally found the missing step in the instructions, but I'm concerned about one problem with the DHCP file... well, seeing as how I've added two overclocked 2100+ s ( dunno how much yet, thats the next experiment....) so that should really help.

But don't worry, I won't have the 100mhz pentium M folding so you're safe there.

Okay, I'm making progress but I'm running into some problems with dhcpd; I think I need a newer version, but that leads to a very long line of package dependencies..... I think the easiest way is to update from 8.1 to 9.1, pray that I have no difficulties with old outdated laptop stuff (though the update part will hopefully prevent that) but there's one problem.... I have to do it over the network! that could be hard...

man, if just I had a spare quiet hard drive lying around and didn't need to use this old laptop....

Update: I've given up on upgrading to 9.1, so, I'm upgrading Glibc the hard way... in other words I have do download a dozen RPMs which all require each other to install......

this stuff is hard work....

I've come to the conclusion that I've totally screwed up my distro there, and aside from divine intervention I'm going to have to grab a scsi PC card and scsi cdrom from work (thats how I got this stuff on there the first time) or become really patient and install over the internet. (that one really scares me!)

There are two things that are good news though- first, I remember all the problems I had last time were GUI related; second, this means I'll be able to write it up start to finish, including installing Mandrake 9.1.

The scary thing though is that this is just the first node- I'm gonna have to wait till I RMA the RAM (that looks funny ) before I set it up the second, and who knows what headaches it will bring

And, just to screw up my F@H production, I'm leaving tomorrow morning on vacation and taking my laptop with me......

I'd install windows asap.. minimum install win98 & only nicdrivers can be done in less then an hour.

windows? I can't imagine what it would run like on a pentium 100.... anyways I'll be doing a very bare bones install; I won't even put the GUI packages on there, so downloading everything off an FTP site won't be too painful.

It may be true, but it's still not good. This is, after all the same company that claimed a 1.25Ghz Mac was faster than a 2.5Ghz P4.

Yup, Apple's PR has been very clever and not a little bit misleading -- more like a lot. I did contact them about the iMac2 -- they claimed they wanted to send me a sample but it never came thru. I bet they'll never send me one of these G5s -- even for a bodyguard-accompanied short-term loan.

My suspicion is that "three times quieter" might mean -9dBA. Technically, this is one interpretation that might be considered correct from a certain PoV. The correct dBA would be -14~15 dBA or -1.4~1.5 bels in sound power. Even if they did achieve it, one has to ask whether the G4's dBA level was at 60 dBA... Another way of repeating Rusty's comment about groin & head kicks

Okay, I've got one option remaining- divine intervention. damn.

Okay, from here I have two options:

First, tonight My dad's bringing home the SCSI card/cd-rom.

Second, I have a spare 4 gigabyte laptop hard drive I could use on one of the nodes- this would be a preferable solution, especially since one of them may not be able to network boot without a floppy or new eeprom. Theres just one problem: the laptop drive has the right number or pins, but they're in a much more compact configuration; which would mean I need an adapter. Anyone know where I can get one?

I don't see it here on first glance, but whoever said that oc'ing the 2100+ to 2700+ would be easy wasn't exactly right. It gets to 2500+ without any voltage increase at all (1.6v) but 2700+ still gives me errors at 1.7v. I guess I'll just stick with 2600+ b/c I don't want to have to turn up my fan....

Edit: on the bright side it seems 200 FSB is no problem, and there isn't any multiplier to hit 2700+ at 200 FSB so its a moot point

I just learned a very weird quirk of the 8rda+. At 200+ FSB, the multipliers 9.0, 10.0, and 10.5 don't work unless you set the "FSB Parameters" to overclocked. No idea what that does, but at least I"m running 10.5x200 now

AAARGHH! Thats it I'm never going to a computer store again, just online for me! I got there, and when the sales rep said they'be there monday.... he meant the 90$ enclosure to a USB plug. But hey, don't worry, we've got this cable! they show one to me, yup, its perfect! Okay, how much? "we have to special order it for $25". Wait a minute... they want to order it online for twice the price I can do it myself? dammit......

Now I have to decide to wait a week an pay $15 or try soldering it all together myself.....

I've gone for option B. there are 42 pins I have to solder; I've succesfully completed the 3 power pins; no smoke or anything!

10 pins down, 29 to go! Only 3 hours at this rate....

there's no way this is gonna work right, hope I don't screw up any IDE channels....

A word of advice: Don't solder with short copper wires. Its very hard on the fingers, copper transfers heat too well....
