Just how much HD space are you using?

Post by Meato » Sun Jan 07, 2007 12:22 pm

I was d/l some benchmarking apps last night and browsing my downloads folder. I noticed some Linux ISOs I had already burned. I figured I better remove them to clear up some HD space. Then I got to wondering just how much space I was actually using on my 3yr old system. Come to find out I was only using 12GB of my 40GB HD.

4GB to WinXP / 5GB to MMO game / 2GB to downloads folder / 1GB to apps + everything else

How much space are you using? How is it distributed?

It's difficult for me to guage accurately, since I am in the process of migrating to a new drive, but at the moment I'd say it's around ~300 GB

4GB OS, 30GB music, 100GB video, 4GB SPCR-related files, 12GB programs, 15GB archives of writing, old video projects etc, 100 GB in progress video projects, & 40GB random media files for other related projects.

1 GB of OS and 500 MB of swap
2 GB for other OS partition, not used
4 GB of software and games... it adds up somehow
6.5 GB random personal data (email archives going back to 2002, school stuff going back to 2001, etc)
55 GB of music, though it's on two drives and there is some duplication. Lots of FLACs, also I think that includes some videos of concerts
100 GB of video data, though again, there's duplication, and some stuff I should really convert from a DVD rip to something more size-reasonable

Lots of other stuff I should get around to categorising, moving, deleting, etc

in total, something like 51 GB of my 60 GB drive and 175 GB of my 250 GB.

Huh. Attempting to calculate over CDEMQ drives and partitions, not counting FreeBSD and Linux partitions...

C - 32.1 / D - 17.0 / E - 24.7 / M - 144.0 / Q - 56.3

Makes total of 274.1 GB.
Well, this includes one temporary lossless video capture, about 44GB, and some videos in processing, about 30-40GB :) Needs to buy another HDD soon.

A quick list from my file server:
  • 300 Gb audio files, mostly FLACs + MP3s (love those Squeezeboxes).
  • 150 Gb video & other media (TV recordings, photography)
  • 75 Gb database data, mostly SQL Server 2000/2005
  • 50 Gb virtual machine images for various server products
  • 25 Gb for installed games (but that only takes a few game titles nowadays)
  • 6 Gb personal data incl. digicam shots.
This list doesn't include the various OS drives/partitions. Oh, and doesn't mention USB backup drives...

Don't worry, Meato, you aren't just sharing a sty with a bunch of media hogs. I'm using less than half of my 20 GB drive (forgive me for not itemizing it.)

Lotsa people out there who don't need much storage (at least at the present time), but maybe not to be found here.

Hmmm.

2.3 GB OS
2.58 GB Programs
12.9 GB Games
2.56 GB Music
227 GB Digital Video

But I am a media whore (cartoon and anime buff).

Heh, I see this. I don't know why I keep my hard drive so spartan. I guess it is b/c my old K6-2/Win98.2 system had a 8GB drive. Interestingly enough, that system is still in use at my sister's household.

I'm still strugling to increase my disk usage.. I'm still only using about 60gb of my 300gb array though. Some day I'll switch to shooting all my photographs in RAW format, which will undoubtedly help me fill up disk quicker. As it is, I only have about 10.5gb worth of photos however. The rest is all music (I put every CD I own on my HD) and random odds and ends. I almost feel like I'm wasting opportunity by not finding more uses for all the space that I do have though.

Windows: 2 GB or so (slipstreamed install is 550MB but I have ~1 GB of fonts)
Linux: 1GB or more, I'm not sure exactly
Images: 5GB
Games: 16GB
Text/word documents: 2GB (a lot of redundancy here)
ISO's/Temp. Lossless video/audio files: ~60 GB (changes a lot)
Media Archives: ~400GB-500GB on various disks (HTPC anyone?)
Utilities & software: ~5GB (linux and windows)

Not sure how much I'm using exactly as it's spread out across 6 HD's varying from 120GB to 400GB in size with some redundancy for really important files.

Total storage capacity I have is ~1.5TiB. Though I intend to sell off some of my old hard drives whenever I get around to it.

On my server:
15GB music
700GB video recording drives for HTPC
200GB archived video
10GB personal files: photos, papers, etc.
15 GB OS backups

The rest of my 7 computers all run 75GB raptor drives with only OS and program files, or 40GB laptop drives with OS and program files.

I really don't need all 700GB for video recording but...

Currently have 44GB free (72GB drive), but that number is constantly dwindling. On dialup I couldn't have imagined ever filling this up, but now that I have broadband it seems very easy. A small chunk, probably 4GB or so, is my ripped and bought music (@ 128kbps WMA, I'm not a big audiophile). OS and installed programs probably account for a similar sized chunk. The rest is video, movie and game trailers, television shows, and anime. Also have a few NES, SNES, and N64 ROMs.

I recently ordered a big spindle of blank DVDs, so I plan to archive video I download to those and delete them off the HDD to free up space. It's convenient to have everything accessible from the HDD, but just not practical for me.
