Quiet Mousepads

Post by s_xero » Wed Feb 21, 2007 2:42 pm

Imagine: new mousepad, smoother and nicer than any mousepad you've ever had. Suddenly you are the number one in the COD2-list  , you die only occasionally in Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat (still the best Battlefield :P ) and in UT you hear "GODLIKE" all the time.

But then there is noise between all the sounds of screaming souls and obliterating death. Scraping, scratching etc...

The point:

I'd like you to share your experiences with mousepads (cloth are mostly inaudible) which men expect to make noise (although some like the sounds).
This includes metal, plastic and glass surfaces. Among the glass ones is for example the "Wow-is-that-a-new-universe??"-popular Icemat.

Thanks too :)

My mousepad isn't really quiet, but the mouse glides on it so nicely I won't go back to cloth. My mousepad is nothing more than a $2 cutting-board. I picked up another to use at work, too. :D

Want a quieter mouse? Toss the pad!

Ok, it's not a mouse. But it sure is quiet!
I'm a trackball convert and will never go back to a silly mouse. 8)

I have an Ulti-Mat Breathe X4.. It's a cloth pad, 550mm x 450mm (21.67inch x 17.73inch) and im pleased with it :) It's slippery enough and it's huge, i can't stand a small mouse pad.

The original teflon coated steel Ulti-Mat is also nice, but it's not as quiet and it's smaller.

Not that I adore Silent Mike as much as some around this forum :P I wonder what he's using. Probably foam or so

To MikeC himself: Sorry, but I'm going to take over the world - then I of course can't adore anyone

I usually use a trackball, and the optical mouse works fine on the plain desktop but when I use a wheeled mouse I use a 3M Precise Mousing Surface. accurate and quiet (though I don't think I've ever ehard a mousepad I'de call loud)

I've been using a Hover Mouse for a couple of months now and it's exquisite. You have to keep pouring liquid helium into it every so often to keep the superconducting magnet below 4.2º K, but it's worth it!

Just a joke. The Hover Mouse was a gag by the online merchant who listed it. I was just playing it up. My jokes are frequently misunderstood (as well as declarations of other types.) It's the nature of message boards (and my peculiarities too, I guess.)

The Trackman is decent. The clicking is quite loud. My thumbs ached after a while too.

My MX Revolution is fantastic. Quiet clicking and smooth scrolling. Side note - once you go with one-touch search, you can't go back. The only problem is the wireless lag sometimes but that can be remedied. I use it with a microsuede mousepad. The pads used to be popular - I got mine at CompUSA. I think Micro Industries was the name of the company that made them. They're pretty small though.

I'm thinking about buying this:

That hovermouse looks insane.

Most hard mats make more noise than soft cloth mats, or at least the sound is more pronounced. You can't beat the accuracy though, as the coating offers just the right amount of glide and friction - speed and precision in other words.

Func 1030 changed my mousing habits for the better. It's too small now, but never again a cloth mat for me; just ordered a Razer Exactmat on sale as it came with a wrist support.

I use a Qck pad mini, from Steelpad. Nice looking, more silent then my previous one and smoother too.

A trackball would be awesome, but i just can't get used to those things.

borrowed a razer copperhead with exactmat off a friend, and ordered mine the very next day. Has a mid pitched scuff noise when slid, but you can blow it across the matt (speed side).

An opaque glass or polished metal should be quieter, but not sure how accurate they are

Best trackball, period. But it's not perfectly silent.
