Seasonic & Other PSU Fan Replacement

Post by Koolpc » Fri Sep 07, 2007 3:05 am

Anyone tried to replace the fan in a Seasonic PSU? What are the connectors like? What are the fan ratings in the psu?

Yep.
What are the connectors like?
Very small 2-pin headers. In other words -- a pain/impossible to reuse. Far simpler to power the new fan using a motherboard header or similar from outside the PSU.
What are the fan ratings in the psu?
Do fans vary enough for that to be a problem? If you look at the review(s) of the relevant or comparable PSU you'll see the fan specs. Mine are in land-fill.

Koolpc,

Yes, I've swapped the fan in a Seasonic PSU. To get around the small 2-pin header problem I used MikeC's "Simple PSU Fan Swap Technique" - works like a treat, clean and simple!

I've swapped the fan and connected it to a manual front-mounted controller - the fan's @ 600 RPM all the time. I don't even up it for gaming as the PSU is stone cold. You could also conect the fan to your mobo and use MBM or Speedfan to adjust the speed for your needs.

I guess you used the Scythe SFF21F 1600 rpm.
How did you find the overall noise attitude after the mod?
Did it make it quitter?
Im planning to do the same any advice to follow?
What kind of soldering did you do?
Any pics will be ideal.
Thangs and greetings to everyone.

Yeah, I use the 1600 S-Flex.

I removed the fan-grill, while I was at it, and I also mounted the fan with rubber thingies. I simply cut the wires, and soldered them together agian... I wasnt aware of MikeC's little trick

Before the fan swap, the Adda fan hovered almost constantly around 800 RPM. Only during gaming, I think it went up to around 850 RPM. Clearly more air, than needed.

Now it's around 5-600 idle / light use. I cant push it above 720 RPM.

IF the rest of the system is very quiet, that is you can actually distinct the S12 noise from the rest, then it'll make a difference. At this point, my Hitachi in a Scythe Quiet Drive, is the noisiest thing. If I disconnect it, it appears that the Seasonic is quiter than a Nexus at 5 volt. This is subjective, and one of my Nexus' have a slight clicking. Anyway, I tend to say it at least is on par with a Nexus @ 5 volt, maybe better.

I own a Seasonic S12 430W REV. A1 for 1,5 year. A few months ago I begun to hear a clicking noise coming from the fan. After a period of time (I don't know how many weeks) it stopped.
But...it seems that the fan became louder after that.

Does anybody know what kind of fan rev. A1 used? Was it a YL sleeve bearing?

Should I "go for it" and make the fan swap using the 1600 Scythe SFLEX?

I will lose the remaining 1.5 year warranty but I bought the Seasonic for its quietness...

Well what is the opinion of the gurus? :D
