I'll make this short.

Silence is not negotiable. I hate noise. Psu must be absolutly silent, or as close to it.
Performance/reliability/low heat, are not negotiable, just as noise.

pc will NOT be overclocked.

pc will be:
motherboardp--5e3 deluxe
cpu--------------quadcore yorkfield 3.0GHZ
videocard-------geforce 8800 gtx
memory---------8GB ddr3 1333mhz
hd----------------1TB samsung

every week or so, a 2nd 1TB will be temporarely added (removable caddy) to make backup of pc.


Who knows, maybe in the future I may add a second geforce 8800 gtx. So psu must be "future proof" for future power needs/upgrades.

Fairly easy question although there is no PSU that is completely silent at load. Your best silent choices are:

Corsair HX Series CMPSU-620HX (620Watt 50A 12v Rails) <--- Modular cables

Corsair TX750W 750W (750Watt 60A 12v Rails) <-- Silent compared to other beastly high watt PSU .

Seasonic S12 Energy Plus (650 Watt 52A 12v Rails)

If you really want absolute silence, you'll have to go fanless. Otherwise, Get a 500W corsair, or Seasonic.

i'm curious, how do you plan to silence the 1 (possibly 2) 8800GTX? otherwise the psu does not have to be silent, just quieter than the 8800GTX and HDDs.

First, I was wondering how you plan on using 2 geforce8800 gtx on an X38 chipset motherboard (the P5E3 Deluxe you specified).

Second, I also want to buy a PSU able to manage 2 geforce8800 (either GT or newest GTS with G92), that being a later upgrade option (when geforce11800 appears ), along with a quadcore, 2GB DDR3, 2 hd, and 2-3 other PCI cards and 4 fans. And I was at one step on buying Corsair HX620W, BUT I saw this post on jonnyguru’s forum:

He stated that 2 x 8800Ultra x 2 SLI on a 680i board w/ QX6800, 2x1GB PC2 8500, two Seagate SATA drives in RAID0, one optical, one floppy, three fans run at full RPM, no PCI-e cards, on board sound, - pulled out 636W !! That means a PSU with at least 800W is mandatory !!
Other results on same build are:
- 2 x 8800GTX x 2 SLI : 527W
- 2 x 8800GTS x 2 SLI : 484 W

I can't give you hard figures, but I can tell you I'm running an E6600 overclocked to 3.4Ghz, two 8800GTs overclocked to 675/975, two 75Gb Raptors, 4x120mm fans, 2Gb of DDR2, a Soundblaster Audigy and an optical drive quite happily off a Corsair HX520

It isn't really a wonder when you can run a system with a 8800GT CPU&GPU overclocked with a 250W PSU.

I'd say the only reason you'd be required to buy a >750W power supply for 8800GTX SLI is because it needs four PCIe 6pin cables and I haven't encountered a sub-750W PSU that has four. Seasonic M12-700 comes with four but you can only plug two in it, can't understand why they ship with four. PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad is a nice PSU with four PCIe cables and a good quality/price ratio. If money is no issue Cooler Master Real Power M850 did very nicely in a recent AnandTech review of PSU 730-900W.
