there are also ubuntu virtual appliances for VMWare, so you could use processor affinity to make each of the four look like a dual core, and thus perhaps avoid the issues people are seeing with their quads ....
But I think I am with you, I will wait until the price of the 9450 comes down a tad ... Aristide - these new Xeons are still Socket 771 but unfortunately they're not compatible with many older boards - My Dell PowerEdge 2900 server will work with the 65nm processors (5100 and 5300 series) but not the 45nm ones (5200 and 5400 series) - Bummer.
The new Penryn-based parts (server and desktop) use a different communication protocol between the CPU and chipset to set/change voltage and frequency. Some boards can work with a BIOS update but many can't be made to work.
Look before you leap for an upgrade. I had plans for these new chips before I found this out. The older quads are more expensive and suck more power than the 45nm ones. I'll probably keep my 2 dual cores and maybe build a different quad core desktop for Folding.

The new 45nm Core2's are great, I've just got an E8200 dual core, stock is 2.66Ghz @ 1.225v ... mine is currently running at 3.2Ghz with 1.1125v, so from my calculations its actually using less power overclocked than it should with everything at stock!
I'm pretty sure this CPU could overclock to some insane speed, but to be honest 3.2Ghz is PLENTY, why produce more heat and noise when its already faster than the fastest 45nm dual core CPU??
