I think I've optimized my system for FAH. I'm running the uniprocessor client and the GPU client on my ga-ma78gm-s2h with a BE-2350. I tried the SMP client, but the GPU starved with four cores running on two processors.

<http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=340320>

It will take a few days to get some points built up. I've just finished my second WU (the first was pretty wimpy).

I know that I can't compare the computations on the CPU and GPU, but the completion rate is very different. The GPU is doing 1% every 7 minutes and the CPU is doing 1% every 38 minutes. It's clear the GPU is going to do a lot more WUs than the CPU.

I'm pretty happy about that, since I don't game or do anything else that might tax the GPU. At least this way I'm getting something out of all those transistors I paid for.

I did run a WMV HD trailer while folding. I'll have to pause folding if I want to watch HD as it was dropping frames pretty frequently.

Edit:

I have overclocked my GPU to 980MHz (stock is 500) with the F4 BIOS. It is folding stable after upping the NB voltage by 0.3V. 1% times are now 3 minutes 40 seconds:-)

I'm back for folding - five machines, all C2D, folding between 10 and 24/7. Now that there's a proper service installation mode for Windows SMP clients...

Welcome back, and thanks for the heads up on the new version of the Windows SMP client.

Well, let's see what the PPD will look like. Strangely, the machines only show between 50 and 70% CPU usage, but the FAH logs look good.

Way to go - and welcome!

I've actually jumped up my production - long overdue update from a Barton 2500 to an E8400

Thanks guys. Actually I've been folding for years but usually at something like 1000 PPD rate. As it's summer and the servers are under-utilized, I decided to step up the tempo for a while. An eight core Xeon 5460 is surprisingly effective. Unfortunately it won't be available for long.

I've decided to re-join the team for a while. Once I figure out the quirks of the various programs, we'll have the following up and running:

PS3
E2160, 8GB DDR2-800, Windows 2003 x64
Q6600, 4GB DDR2-800, Windows XP Pro
Q6700, 4GB DDR2-800, Windows XP x64
Q6700, 4GB DDR2-800, Fedora9 x86_64

The XP Pro and XP x64 machines will have the GPU clients folding, as long as I can figure out how to get them to work properly as a service. That's my main problem right now, since I'd rather have all of this run in the background without any niggling windows or tray icons.

hey all,
just started folding a minute ago.
installation was a breeze
GO SPCR !!!!!!
I'll look into using Cuda on my GPU (9800GTX+)... looks interesting

Random question (sorry, no time to google this right now) : how do I use 100% of my CPU ? I have an E7200 and only 50% is beeing used... (sorry again for the question)

Hi,

The 50% you are using is one of the cores. The best way to use both cores, is to use the SMP version of Folding@Home. What OS are you using?

windows XP or Ubuntu, depends what mood I'm in
right now, folding on XP

I'm wondering : would my GPU or my CPU be better folders ?
(CPU = E7200 with 2Gb RAM)
(GPU = 9800GTX+ with 512Mb RAM)

I'll look more into folding sometimes this afternoon.

Hi,

If your Ubuntu is 64bit (which it probably is) this will be the better choice for Folding@Home. It is much more stable and much faster with the SMP client. There are SMP clients for WinXP, though at the moment, I am having problems getting them to work. If you run the GUI client and the CLI (command line) client in WinXP, that is okay; but it is not as fast/efficient as the SMP client. (You can't run two of the same clients in Windows, at least not easily.)

Hey all.

I've got a console client running on each core of my e7200@ 3.2Ghz

I read the SMP client was best with quads and that it still has problems... so wasnt sure if I should go with that.

For now I've also got the GPU client (running at higher priority than console so it gets CPU) folding away on my 9600 GT. Not sure if that'll be a permanent fixture, since I'm worried that folding for hours each day might mean a shorter card life. That said, it never goes above 52C.. not bad for a passively cooled card.

Just installed the folding program on the desktop box:
K45 w / E2200 & 2 gigs of 667DDR2 OC'd to 2.65 running XPPro SP3

New to the folding thing but thought I would donate the processor space while the machine is on but NOT in use.

Many thanks for you contributions and welcome aboard :!:

:D

Trav1s - No more loud anything!

qpegasus - SMP is pretty stable, especially that Deino version which I haven't figured out how to install. What does happen is occasionally there is a slew of bad work units that all fail and that's just how it goes, but it does scare people into thinking their hardware has gone crazy. It hasn't.

If you can get the free Rivas tuner and try increasing your shader speed. It will make the most difference in your points per day. Don't go crazy though.

Also - don't be shy in looking at the forums over at folding.stanford.edu

Chances you are not the first person who sees a particular bug, and if there's a solution for it, well it's going to be there.

Also 2 - FAH executables expire. There's no formal warning, just keep the data in mind. Afterwards they get an error that doesn't really say expired either. Just be aware for now.

Welcome again.

frenchie, if you download and install the latest CUDA drivers your CPU usage for the GPU folding will drop to almost zero. You can then leave it like that are you can also start an SMP version as well.

GPU folding currently earns the most points. You could probably push your shader speed up a bit as well.

Just added the 12" iBook 1.33 with 1.5 gig of RAM to the team. Nothing terribly fast but it is low wattage, cool and quiet. 8)

If I recall, someone here told me no more loud anything is a good thing.

aristide1 : thanks for your advice. I just did that but it seems I have a funky work unit for now... my GPU folds for 5 seconds and stops... then starts again after 10secs... Strange...

I also have a regular CPU client installed now :-)

If you are running GPU and SMP you should lower the priority of SMP, perferrably to the lowest setting. It still runs fine.
