I have just come across this on the BBC website, thought it might be of some interest for folks here. It is still very much at the experimental stage, but it looks rather promising:

you need to be inside the cloak to be protected from noise, somehow I think a wearable version of this is a long way off. it won't help to "cloak" your PC, as it will stop noise getting in but won't stop it getting out.

Shouldn't it work both ways? How should the cloak know which way is "in" and which is "out". But the case can not be 100% covered with this material, and reading the article it will be several inches thick. The sound will still come from the ventilation holes that are totally necessary in computers still.
