New Atom based D945GLCF

Post by salmonguy » Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:42 pm

Hi all,

I have just ordered myself:

D945GLCF with the Atom 230:

RAM
Corsair Value Select 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 CL5 240PIN DIMM Memory

HDD
Samsung Spinpoint M Series HM250JI 250GB SATA 5400RPM 12MS 8MB 2.5IN Hard Drive

POWER
PICOPSU-90 with Power Kit Includes Pico PSU 90W DC-DC ATX PSU & AC-DC Switching Power Adapter

mobo
Intel BOXD945GCLF MINI-ITX 945GC Atom 230 1.6GHZ DDR2 1PCI SATA

Zalman ZM-F1 80MM Case Fan 1700/3000RPM 3PIN 20/34DBA W/ Quiet Mode Adapter

I have some questions. I am a real newbie at this; Thanks for your help in advance...

The uses for this:
1. Always on PC
2. Kitchen placement (probably)
3. Skype - voice and video
4. Slingbox
5. Sonos music file storage
6. Web surfing
7. Email

I have an OEM 64 bit Vista pack. I would like to install this. Will it work OK with Vista ?

I have no case, I really would not mind making a (temporary) case out of wood, but am told that I will have problem with RF (shoulds I be bothered about this and what shielding is easiest to source)

What is the MINIMUM size that I can make the box, (given the height of the Northbridge fan is 4.5 cms) ?

How can I make this the quietest - I don't really understand about set fan speeds etc. where can I learn, what can you tell me ?

When I go to install the software, the fact that I only have an external USB drive, there is not problem with installing the software with that ?

Do you know of anyone who has published (on the internet) a good guide to setting one of these up ? (I have read lots of little bits and pieces).

Thanks.

You may want to consider getting this awesome Mini ITX case for your new build  :

very funny... :P .This box seems to be around 50 cms tall. I am actually in Japan at the moment and know how much these things cost...a small fortune.

i want the smallest case possible, considering the height of the Northbridge fan is 4.5 cms tall.

I suppose that what I specifically want to know is, what clearance does the fan need ? One cm, Two ?? So can I get away with case dimensions of
18X 18 X 6 cms ?

thanks again.

@ elpibe,

Incredible boxes you have there. That's a small fortune!

The black Altium VR1000 is one nice case.

Thanks :)

I'm currently contemplating whether to add the WiNDy Cube Energy MC3 to my collection. Would love to have a NAS at home although I don't really need it :?

@salmonguy

Vista will work on the board, the 64-bit version should work fine as well, just don't expect it to be very fast. Aero will run. Installing from an USB optical drive (that's what you plan to do, right?) is no problem either. When you ask for guides setting this up, what do you refer to exactly? I can try to help if any questions arise.
