Radeon 9800 Pro with low airflow fan
Over the last year, I have cooled my GF4 Ti4200 with a 80mm NMB fan blowing on its side at 12V, which is not silent but I find it quiet enough for a gaming computer, and it's always stable.
My question is, as I'm thinking about upgrading to a Radeon 9800 Pro, do you all think this same approach would work for that card?

As I was saying in this post to cliche, I don't see why you couldn't unplug the stock fan and somehow mount an L1A pointing directly at the heatsink, that is if you don't overclock (cliche has his overclocked). I know 12v L1As are not silent, but they should be much better than the stock. Just my guess, though. I don't have one of these cards to vouch for whether or not this would work. I have done my GF3 Ti200 card this way with no problems whatsoever, using the Zalman 123 in a more creative way than it was originally designed for.

The stock Radeon 9800 fan is not as loud as... say, a GeForceFX 5900 fan, but it's not quiet at all. I have two 120mm fans (running around 1400rpm each,) a Zalman 7000-AlCu, Western Digital HD, and the Antec Sonata case with the one-fan TruePower, and the Radeon 9800 is easily the loudest thing inside the case. It makes an audible "wind" noise that I can hear when the case is closed and it's a veritable source of sound. However, it does a pretty nice job of cooling the card and pushing hot air out. Chances are, though, if you've made an attempt to buy silent computer parts, then it's going to be the loudest thing in your computer. Personally, it's a clear sound that I can hear from my case.
I added a fan controller to my computer to drop the voltage to my Panaflo 120mm intake fan. Without the wind noise, I can now hear my 9800 pro fan. It's kind of high pitched and annoying. Almost makes me want to turn the intake fan up a bit because that's a nicer pitch.
So, my earlier remark about the 9800 pro fan being quiet was not entirely accurate.
Anyone have a fix?
