This doesn't mean much unless you tell us what the rest of your airflow setup is...

it's the default setup in an antec p182.
Three tricool fans on LOW-setting inside the chassi.
that's it

I have two of those running in Crossfire and get around P13000 in 3DMark Vantage. In addition I have a BFG Physx card. Works well for me, 1920x1080 in Unreal Tournament with all settings maxed out + Physx enabled and it runs _smooth_.

They never go over 60 C, even after several hours of gaming. CPU stays below 50 C.

Specs:

case: Antec P182 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811129025

fan controller: Sunbeam RHK-EX-SV http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811995017
other stuff: bluetooth+wireless keyboard+Gyration mouse+game controllers

The only "mod" I did was to remove the fan from the heatsink on the Physx card and replaced it with a Zalman heatsink originally intended for northbridge cooling. I had to cut the fins down to make it fit on the last PCI slot. All the slots are now in use due to the PCI fan being in between the Radeons. I added five Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E/D fans (removed the stock fans):

With the Sunbeam lowering the fan speeds, the system is extremely quiet (I can only hear the HD occasionally and the Blu-Ray drive when it's running).

I agree, that looks really awsome!
A little expensive for me right now, but I got jealous. :D
Im intrerested in this card, but im not sureif I will buy it yet.

Will a single HD4850 lag on any game at 1280x768 with maxed out settings? (For example Crysis on very high)

All I can say is that most reviews seem to be very happy about the card's performance and most negative comments I've read are from people who never actually used it (just assume the heatsink solution won't be enough).

It works great for me and runs cool but I can't comment on Crysis. If I end up buying it, I'll write here how it works with my config.

I wonder how this card performs with a fan attached, assuming you can mount one, and how many slots it would obstruct. Is this any better then accelero s1 (the damm thing with a fan is obstructing 4 slots on my board).

A guy in one of our forums did a test with it. Config:
Lian Li PC-B20B
Intake fan: SCYTHE SLIP STREAM SY122512SH @7V
Video card cage fan: SCYTHE SLIP STREAM SY122512SH @7V
Ninja2 fan: SCYTHE SLIP STREAM SY1225SL12M @5V
Exhaust fan: NEXUS Real Silent 80 mm
Corsair TX650
Room ambient ~24°C
Idle

Five? The P182 has only three. Why do you need five and why is it good for your system?

You think you can upload some pictures on what your config looks like at the moment?

It should since it fits in my Fusion which should have the same interior as the 2480.

I got mine and it's running nicely even when the core temperature reached 115C after an hour of gaming at its default overclocked frequencies and standard voltage. The small fins sticking out from the rear of the card get really hot so the cooler is doing its thing. The openness of my Stacker 810 case probably leads to there being very little air flowing through the cards rear vent, as air has plenty of other places to enter from. I might put a fan over the card area if I can find an old frame I've got, but the temps don't worry me since there's no sign of artifacting even in a game like FarCry 2.

I lowered the GPU voltage one notch with ATI Tray Tools with full 3D clocks as well as lowered the memory clock and GPU voltage for a 2D/video mode which saves a few watts. Gigabyte has their Gamer HUD software that does about the same thing without any need for configuration, but I prefer tinkering with the tray tool and then maybe modify the BIOS with proven settings.

Though for the moment it seems that the card cannot be tweaked much more to lower the power draw. At 500/500 low load clocks the card draws about 20W more than my 3870 at "idle", which I can live with. I ran my 3870 at 300/300 but using less than 500/500 here makes some AVIVO video settings crap up, which may perhaps be improved in a future driver.

The card is a beauty with the blue PCB.

Will it perform as expected?

Post by australis » Wed Nov 05, 2008 4:58 am

Hi. I came across this model of Gigabyte (GV-R485MC-1GH). Seems to be the exact solution to my silent pc dream! But I wonder if it can run without a hitch in a mid-ATX case with only one 12cm. exhaust fan (except psu's 12cm fan) and I don't plan to use an intake fan because of extra noise. Will this card perform as expected (no overheat, no artifacts in games etc.) under these conditions? Should I buy it or prefer an active cooled one like Powercolor 4850 PCS+ (21dB)? 'cause my main concern is silence, but I sure plan to play games from time to time. Need your advice. Thank you.

I had this card, like yours it reached 110.c+ under load. the card throttles its self back to 500 mhz at 107.c so this basicaly means the card is over heating and trying to save itself by underclocking to what should be the idle/2d clocks.

not a good card if you ask me... especialy if your airflow is not brill like mine, i have a 600 rpm 12cm fan at rear, the 12cm fan in the seasonic s12 (both blowing out) and a 12cm noctua intake at 500rpm.

with the adition of a slow 80mm noctua strapped to the card, temps went down to 80.c under load and the card no longer throttled back to 500mhz when gaming.

that one has now failed and been RMA'd. i am now awaiting replacement, overall it seems like if you have airflow typical of an spcr-er :? you should be careful when using this "passive" card... i recomend an accelero s1 and a cheaper, reference 512mb model, togethor they cost a bit less and you card will be cooled better. the accelero s.1 that cooled my old hd3850 in the same case/fan set up to 55.c under load with no fan. granted the 3850 uses~20w less than the 4850 but you can still see the huge difference in cooling power

Edit: pic added

I ended up literally hanging a thin 70mm fan perpendicularly onto the middle heatsink that protrudes a little over the side of the card. Using 5V it's completely silent and although at first I was sceptical since it blows so little air, it makes a good difference of about 30C lower on load. In this position the fan does not get in the way of other cards either. Now(jan 09) it's been hanging like this for two months and overclocking a bit without issues.

Image

The cards cooler is well built even if it needs a wiff of air as help. The problem is as said that it's likely to not fit with many SPCR forumers builds, so I also wouldn't recommend the card to everyone. The regulating components might be a bit better than some others on this Gigabyte card. Both the graphics memory and mostfets seem to do well even overclocking without heatsinks.

I'm also sticking with using ATI Tray Tools for regulating clocks, as I didn't get quite as good results from modifying the BIOS on this card as with my old HD3870. Specifically it was harder to achieve a balance of clock settings where the card would not go into 3D mode while playing video, but reliably going 3D when gaming. I'm guessing it's all about a difference between which BIOS clock values the two generations of cards uses in different situations. Besides, with the program it's possible to choose exactly which applications or games that are not to trigger full 3D performance clocks.

Mine is working great. It does need some airflow:

Idle with side of case removed: 70c
Idle with case closed: 42c
Idle with case closed w/ duct: 37c

My duct goes from the vertical openings at the back of the Solo to put the air right onto the card's heatsink toward the front of the case. If you watch the promo stuff on giga-byte.com you'll see that it is designed for cases with a side panel air vent. I simulated this by ducting the back of the Solo to put air into the side of the card.

My solo has
2 Nexus 92mm at the front at 5V.
1 Nexus 120mm at the rear, 12V (I'll probably lower this now that I have the duct working).
Xigmatek 1293 CPU w/ stock Fan
Corsair 450VX power supply

I'm very happy with the card, it's much easier to cool that I thought it would be, and I'm glad I went for it over a 4670.

I got one of these a few days ago.
I've edit the bios to run at 160/225/0.968v during 2d/uvd states and 1.044v on 3d.

On a Solo case with an e5200-passive ninja2 combo I'm getting 50ºC on idle, 70º-ish during a witcher session and 93º during furmark stressing. Airflow is limited to 2 outtakes- the ninja fan and the power supply fan(s12-380), both running at around 800rpms.

The card(or maybe the power supply) seems to chirp/whine on high framerates. And it seems the higher the framerate the louder it chirps/whines. At ~300 fps, I can't detect anything(although my wd3200aaks is bloody awful and could be masking the whine); at ~500, I can clearly hear it; at ~1500fps, it sounds as if a small bird made its nest inside the case. :x

I got one of these also. The whine Sousa mentioned is there, however this is a non-problem to me as I use Rivatuner to force vsync in games and with 60fps it doesn't whine.

The temps where pretty high, rising little over 100 celcius without a fan on it. My case is P180 with 3 Nexus fans and similar fan on cpu. After sticking 120mm fan to the card the temps dropped dramatically to roughly 45 at idle and 60-62 under load. Would be interesting to try couple of these cards in Crossfire.

I think this is a reasonably priced compared to buying 1GB HD4850 and an aftermarket cooler at least here in Finland where this costs ~200€ compared to 175€ of those with a fan.

Has anyone tried HDMI audio? I read one of the reviews at newegg that said it didn't work... I am trying to decide whether to get this or the 4670. Would prefer to get this one, but if HDMI audio doesn't work, I am not interested.

What sort of heat does the Gigabyte radiate?

I am worried because I will have to place my SCSI card in the slot right underneath.

My cousin just got 2 of these cards in crossfire. We had huge problems with the drivers, but apparently there were some new drivers out today that solved all problems. :D

I can confirm that they run really hot without some kind of cooling. He got a 400mm case fan blowing on them so the temp is about 70-75 at load now. I was afraid that the top card would be alot hotter, because its so close to the lower card, but both cards seem to have the same temprature with this cooling solution. :)

I am really interested in this card for my next build. Any thoughts on what is better:

1. Gigabyte passive 4850, or

2. Cheaper 4850 + aftermarket cooler.
