Which Radeon 9800 Pro?

OK zalman ZM80C plus an OP1 (set for 5V) fan in place.

My general impressions are that it's quieter, but certainly couldn't be considered silent. The case temp appears to have gone down 2C, but the CPU has gone up 2C. I think the fan is disrupting the airflow on my SLK800.

Haven't done anything to really push the GPU, so it's not clear just how effective the unit is. Is there any way to measure the heat on the ATI 9800?

Nope. Run 3DMark as a loop for an hour. If it doesn't crash, you've passed.

I don't find 3DMark to be the best heat-inducer because of the breaks between the tests. Try something 3D like Neverwinter Nights and leave it running with the environment spinning around you. Spinning isn't necessary, though. Leaving any complex 3D game running even with a static display will have the GPU and CPU redrawing the scene continuously.

I had my CPU fan slowed down via a dial at one time for silence and I sped it up manually before gameplay. One day my 5yr old daughter fired up Need for Speed from my idle desktop and left it running for ages in the background with the screensaver eventually blanking it out. Temps were astronomical! I don't depend on dials anymore...

once again if panaflo is listening, a temperture controlled fan, perhaps one with a pot where you could set the cut on point of the fan. or a silent TT smart fan
