radeon 9500 (non-pro)...can I get away w/

Post by Dr. Smith » Wed Sep 24, 2003 6:57 am

just an 80mm panaflo on a zalman fanbracket @ 7-10v...anyone used this approach? I'm not a gamer..its for HTPC (I've heard 2d video doesn't really drive the card much anyway). I would like to use the factory HS w/ a larger fan blowing on it from the side...I really don't want to buy the zalman heat pipe or VGA heatsink..I would probably end up screwing up the card trying to put those on.

I have a gf3 ti200 in an older machine and it runs fine this way, so has anyone done this w/ a 9500

If your just using it for 2d then why are you getting the card. Its mainly a gaming card, there are better and cheaper cards out there that do 2d well.

Its for HTPC use into a CRT projector. the general consensus is that the radeon series is better than geforce for the last few years and going forward. Quite a few people have had "issues" w/ the 9600. The 9000 is a step backward from the 8500.

Other than that, I'm getting a good deal on it and just want to see if I can easily quiet it down

FYI...you can visit the HTPC section at avsforum.com if you want to debate the merits of a more advanced Video card for video reproduction...its been discussed at length.

9600 is a realitively cool running card, you could probably get away with that.

Heh - he actually said 9500. :)

The 9500 might run a little hotter than the 9600, due to the .15 manufacturing process. You should still be fine - according to the review of the Zalman heatpipe, the reviewer successfully ran a low speed fan over the stock HS on a TI4200 (which I think runs hotter than the 9500) with perfectly acceptable results.
