For the past month or so, I've become obsessed with quieting down my system. I currently have an Athlon 1GHz, (3) 80GB hard drives, CDROM, CD-RW and a GeForce Video Card. I went out and bought a new Power Supply (silencer 400) and a bunch of "quiet" fans (silencer 80 and 92mm). But that's not enough!!

<BR>I'm hunting for a new system now (2 GHZ Athlon Thoroughbred, when available) along with a new VIA KT333 mainboard and DDR333 RAM.

<BR>How do I get all of those fans to shutdown when I put the system in sleep mode? I have considered hooking the fans to the mainboard power links (they currently have 4 pin plugs that I would need to adapt to the 3pin headers), but I'm not sure if this will help...Does the system bios shutdown fans in sleep mode?

<BR>I saw a mod that included manual switches to turn fans on and off, bet that was a bit much.

<br>You do need to take a systems approach. There are 3 main sources of noise in your PC: PSU, hard drives, and CPU heasink-fan. If you just want buy the quiestest components: Zalman PSU, biggest copper Zalman flower heatsink & Seagate Barracuda IV drives are a great start. Go through our FAQs for suppliers & hints, and our Articles for mods, etc.

<br>Hint: lower your CPU Vcore to decrease temps & airflow needs. 0.1V-0.2V reductions can be made, but don't overclock.

I've been reading the articles here with interest. I am trying to quiet down a 1ghz P3. The enermax PSU is the loudest thing. It sounds like I need to get the Zalman PSU for starters. Should I also upgrade the fan to a Panaflo? As far as the CPU fan...I don't understand exactly what I should do there. Right now I have some kind of hybrid sink/fan thing. I can't tell if its noisy or not because the PSU is SUPER noisy. Then there are two case fans on the front, a large one and small one...again..I can't tell if they are noisy or not because of the PSU which is horrifically loud.

<br>So the Zalman sounds like the right PSU to get. Will I get even more improvement by putting the Panaflo pan on there?

Find out exactly which Enermax it is -- they have many models, they don't all work the same way. See the PSU quieting artilce in Mods/Proj and the one about running a PSU fanless in Articles -- they're based on different Enermax models.

yes i also started with buying a silent power supply.
then i found out, that my pcu-fan was the loudest noise source in my system. (i have an amd athlon 800, slot a ) searching for more silent coolers touhgt me, that there aren´t any old-styled cooling systems available, neither on the internet, nor in stores around me.
i found a sigle fanned pentium psu, wich fits to my processor.
i was worried about the cpu temperature, but it´s running stable at about 53 to 55 degrees celsius.(compared to 42 to 44 with the old one).
this one is much better !
according to your tip, i´m going to lower the cpu vcore, thanks.
i´m thinking about building my own fanless cpu cooler from the modell of the zalman. of course i will then mount a substitutional fan to provide a constant airflow within my case.
any ideas ?
