Just got a power meter today £10 off amazon, bargain!), havent tried it out on my main system yet (the wall socket is behind a cabinet, right pain in the ass to get to), but my file server's power socket is easily acessable, so heres some numbers. I
Idle:A satisfying 47w.
Fully stressed:(x264 encode + HDTune benchmark both drives) 83w.
Streaming 1080p: 54w
Streaming SD Xvid: 50w


spec:
AMD Sempron LE-1640 2.6Ghz
ASUS M2a-MX 690V mobo
1x2GB corsair DDR2 800
2x 1TB Greenpower (4 platter EACS version)
1x 120mm scythe S-FLEX @ 5v
1x 92mm Scythe Kama @ 7v
1x Optical drive (used during installation, forgot to unplug after)
Corsair 400w HX PSU.

Not bad, but my motherboard holds me back somewhat from getting into the sub 40w area.
I got it cheap off a friend for £10 with the CPU on, its BIOS is as simple as they come, so no underclocking/volting. and the IGP uses more than the 780G chipsets. But at most i think i could bring this system down by about 5-10w, so not worth it in my book.
Not to shabby for a system that (minus HDD's) cost me less than £100.

atom systems have a good performance and low consumption (even with the relatively power hungry 945g chipset). Actually I would like to build a second pc with atom 330 (dual core), with slightly higher power requirements (but hopefully under 30w idle if carefully modded).
Power AC regulator consumes alone 3w. Router 6w. The led lamp on my desk is less than 1w).
I am so concerned for power consumption for ecological reasons and becouse the very high price of electricity here in Mexico.

atom 330 board costs 83 USD (+30 USD int. shipping). Less than dual core amd. Moreover power consumption idle would be higher.

BIOS undervolt prevents dropping voltage at EIST idle, so it runs the same voltage at 2.0 GHz and 3.0 GHz. The 98W is just enough to turn the screaming fan on in the EDAC brick.

Notes: Still a work in progress and will probably change as time goes on. The voltages are as low as I can go without crashing in Orthos. Summer is approaching so let's see if it stays stable at OC speeds. The memory was supposed to run at 1.9v stock but it wasn't stable until I ran it at 2.1v

Case fans suck! I found that a fan can use 3 watts easily. So a few of them can add up to a lot!
Intel stock fan rocks! It starts at a 775rpm and even at full speed of 1800rpm it's still quiet. The cheap plastic mount sucks though.
DDR3 ram But isn't DDR2 cheaper and has faster timings? All the reviews on the web about DDR2 vs. DDR3 ram when I was researching pointed out to articles that were two or more years old. Prices of DDR3 were 3-4 times what DDR2 were back then. So I think it isn't the case anymore. Timings has improved a little too. The only thing I never realized is that getting 2000+ mhz ram is not worth it if your CPU is not properly matched to it. Luckily the 1600mhz ram I got is matched to the E8500 when I overclocked it to 3.8ghz (400mhz) otherwise I was running it at 1333mhz at stock 3.16ghz (333mhz)

I finaly got around to testing my pcs:

Desktop PC consumption

CPU E5200 @ 3.30 ghz 1.2v vcore
Idle 48W
Load 75W

Dual monitors: 62w combined

Server Power Consumption
Idle 58w
Load 89w

edit:Changed the motherboard in desktop, and overclocked more to 4ghz, low load power usage is : 116W, but its not silent any more :(

Next move is to PICO powersupplies.

Sceptre 20 inch monitor uses right at 50 watts with brightness turned way down.

Since it has been stable for months I feel now confident to post it:

Case: just an empty old case
PSU: picoPSU 120W + EDAC 110W AC-DC adapter
Motherboard: Asus M2A-VM HDMI (690G onboard)
Cpu: 4850E
Ram: Kingston Valueram 1GB 800Mhz DDR2
HD: WD 2.5" Scorpio 250GB
Additional nic: tplink PCI 10/100 eth
Tv tuner: Asus P7131H
Card reader: trust cr-3400 (all cables are loop through except the card reader usb, connected only on-demand)
Fans: cpu stock fan (motherboard managed) + 2 x 80mm standard coolermaster fans (@5V)

CPU management: CrystalCPUID (0.800V/1.0GHz - 0.800V/1.4GHz - 1.125V/2.5GHz)

Idle: 33W (card reader usb not connected)
CPU max load: 70W (the max I've seen with orthos, "typical" application full is around 65W)

Under 24x7 load (router/firewall) : 34W
Watching TV: 40W (the tuner seems to add +2/3W idle, +6W as tv tuner - just an estimate)
Without additional nic, tv tuner, card reader it can idle at 28/29W (0.8V/1.0GHz).
Peak reached during os install (CPU at default, 1.250V/2.5GHz): about 100W

For a camera application, we were looking for a compact , low power PCI express x4 platform. At the time of selection, the POV MB330 ION-ATOM seemed the only platform available (intel arrandale and atom pineview were not released yet) providing these features. We did the following power measurements:

MB : Point Of View, POV ION-MB330 (miniITX, atom 330 + ION chipset and PCI express x16)

PS1: Deer/Allied DR-8250SFX (POV ION-CS330 system came with SPIRE/APEX case with PS1 installed)

measurement device: Voltcraft Energy check 3000 @ 230V

Power with XP running idle:
PS1: 28W
PS2: 20W !!!!
PS2: 22.6W (2 x 2GB SODIMM PC2-6400 (800MHz) )

Now with frame grabber installed (also idle): Dalsa X64 Xcelera-CL PX4, PCI express x4
PS1: 37W
PS2: 30W

I exprerimented also with other supplies. The results can be found at:

Conclusion:
* (FSP) Pico PS significant more efficient, especially at lower powers.
* 2G additional memory draws 2.5...3W more
* POV MB330 ION-ATOM with 2 Gbye memory combined with a pico PS consumes < 20 Watt idle !!!!!.
The POV MB330 ION-ATOM (cost around 120 euro) makes it possible to build a small/compact, low priced, low power ( < 20W !!! idle with pico PSU ) system with PCI express x16 functionality.

Just finished building my new i7 computer, and I was shocked to see the power consumption. I, like many people here, hate to see people on forums recommending 600W power supplies to run dual-core, mid-power systems, so imagine my surprise when I checked my Kill-A-Watt last night...

410W load (Prime95 + Furmark)
~295W CPU-only load (Prime95)
160W idle

I wasn't too surprised by the high idle power consumption, but that load power consumption really surprised me. I have a Seasonic S12II-Bronze 430W, so no chances of overloading the power supply (computer's probably only drawing 340W DC), but it was still pretty shocking to see.

By the way, I've never heard a Seasonic power supply ramp up its fan so much during load.

On a side note, I have no qualms about the noise level of the computer in idle. When in load, however, the Seasonic ramps up. Sounds louder and more annoying than an S-flex 1200rpm at full tilt. I originally had the motherboard taking care of the Slipstream fan's speed automatically, but it was too loud, so I plugged it into the Kaze-Q and now I control the speed manually. Not sure about the voltage, but it's not nearly at the top of its speed range, and it keeps the i7 below 85C during Prime95. Idle temps are around 50.

I added water cooling to my setup. so its quiet again :D

CPU: E5200 @ 2ghz (no point goin lower as the motherboard wont let me lower the vcore!! this underclock only saves me 10w at load, not sure if its worth it.)
HSF: mini ninja, + AC 8025pwm fan
RAM: 4gb ddr2 800
HDD: Hitachi DeskStar 1TB 7200 (the loudest part in the system by far, i have it on a piece of polystyrene to stop it touching the metal case, but i can still hear the ocaisonal seek sound)
GPU: GeForce 7300 GS
PSU: picopsu 150XT + Dell DA2 220W

power consumption
Idle: 45W

load watching a 720p video,a few torrents and runing mprime on both cores: 70w

idle and load measured using a kill-a-watt

im sure i could go lower if i brought a better motherboard with intergrated nvidia gpu, and more the ability to undervolt the cpu

edit: replaced the 1tb hard drive with 2*1.5tb samsung F2s usage whilst folding and watching a 720p video is 68w ,

I am soon going to upgrading to a Phenom 9550 quad core (95 watt), I am very curious how much power it will draw at idle and load...
have you upgraded your system to a Phenom quad? If so what is the new power consumption figures?
