Hello all you good people!

I have a G5 iMac with a 160gb hard drive which I'd like to upgrade to a 500gb.

I could really do with some advice and recommendations on which drive to chose.

I'm thinking that because of the imac's design, it should be a quiet drive that doesn't get too hot.

Thanks

Your spec. 7200rpm S-ATA..so it's most likely a 3.5" drive...

Actually, it's the middle one on the page in the next post.

I knew it was a 3.5" sata already, but are you saying I can't put a 5400rpm in?

No, just confirming it's a 3.5" SATA drive. The increased density of the 1 platter 500GB 5400rpm drive may cause it to be about as fast as your current 160GB 7200rpm HDD.

Thanks for your help

Not really, at this moment only Samsung has brought up a 500GB single platter HDD. By the way, I am very positive it'll work with your Mac; my friend has the exact same Mac so I knew already it supports 3.5" SATA HDDs :P

That's cool, but any 3.5" sata will do won't it and there are many on the market. I guess it doesn't HAVE to be a single platter.

I just wondered what other drives you guys might think would be ok for the imac's small form factor.

The p7k500?
The WD green?

??

You can't suspend a drive in the iMac, so you want one with minimal vibration. The Samsung seems to be the winner in this regard. If you want a faster, but noisier drive, go with the WD 6400AAKS.

Or, you could just go with an external enclosure and run it via your Firewire400 or USB 2.0 ports.

Has the WD Green wd5000aacs been reviewd by SPCR yet?

I couldn't find it, but I may be missing something in my search.

Not as far as I know, but why go for the Western Digital GreenPower, it's a two platter design.
