Anybody tried the "Smart Drive" enclosure?
This review from silentpcreview.com is the only real information I've been able to find:

I'd hate to put my drives at risk (and it costs $75 as well) without getting more info on it. Has anyone tried one? If so, did it perform as well as the review says?

Hiya, welcome to the forum!
Which HD(s) do you have? Could you try elastic mounting them (mechanically decoupling) in your case? There are guides in the mods & projects section... Might be wirth a try since it is very inexpensive solution to HD noise.

Yes, I'm using 2 of them in my system right now. I love love love them! I have a WD 1200JB and a Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB both inside Smart Drives, and I can't hear them at all. The enclosures get warm, so I know it's conducting at least some of the heat away from the drive. Haven't had a single problem yet. The only noise I hear from my system now is fan noise, and I'm using a Panaflo, 3 Papst, and a Zalman power supply.
If you live in Los Angeles near a User's Side (Japanese PC shop), you can find the aluminum Smart Drive for $50. They also have the copper one, but it was about $80 last time I checked.

Okay... their address is darned close from my work (gardena).
Now the problem is... I can't read a thing in their webpage !!! Do they even speak english?
I think I will be using babel all night...
Okay... i did check it and they say $69 for older one and $79 on new model... not quite $50... sigh... still too expensive I guess.

Mine too! Luckily, I'm getting it replaced under warranty. Even just moving it to the bottom of the case and sitting it on some foam drastically reduced the usual noise, although the whine remained.Gdog123 wrote:Is anybody currently using the SilentDrive setup? I believe my Maxtor still has a warranty as well. How has the RMA process been??simmers wrote:Mine too! Luckily, I'm getting it replaced under warranty. I dealt with Mesh who sold me my PC six months ago, so it's been no problem, took a couple of weeks. Don't know about dealing with Maxtor directly. An engineer came out this week with a new drive, but it would only boot into Windows in Safe Mode so he took it back. It was also a Fireball, not the D740X, so I want to make sure that I get an equivalent replacement! Probably now the DiamondMax Plus 8, 6E040L0?
