WD10EVDS, new "best" 1TB silent HDD?

Post by MortyEU » Mon Dec 14, 2009 7:58 pm

Based on the tips I got in another thread on this forum, I'm researching 1TB harddisk drives. I'm looking for a quiet solution, not performance.

I think the WD 1 TB AV-GP "WD10EVDS" looks promising; it is a 2-platter 5400 RPM 3.5" drive. Specs are here (Specifications -> download PDF):
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=617

I have not found any reviews of this model, it appears to be pretty new. I'm guessing these drives will have the same "head parking issue" as other recent WD drives, but I think I can live with this issue.

Has anyone seen any reviews of this drive? Is there anything bad to say about this drive, except perhaps the head parking?

Its seems to be the same as the EVCS but with more cache.

Having said that, I have had a 1Tb WD10EVCS for over a year inside a TiVO and it is very, very...very quiet indeed.

As I read the PDF at http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/A ... 701250.pdf there are 2 drives:
WD10EVDS with 32 MB cache and
WD10EVVS with 8 MB cache.

The drives do not appear to be the same as the EVCS; or am I getting this wrong?

The EVCS is 16mb cache. Same exact drive as the EVVS.

EVCS has been discontinued I believe.

I wonder what made the original poster think the WD10EVDS might have just two platters (500GB each). I'd like to know for a fact whether or not they have two or three platters, but I'm aware that sometimes, Western Digital makes it hard to know this information, at least harder to find out than with other manufacturers' drives.

A little dated, but still useful.

I figured it probably used 320GB platters, and so it probably does according to that database. Of course, under the hood, we all know Western Digital tend to change things around under the hood so I guess we'll never know for sure, since each drive could be different.
