Cheap, fanless + on-board x86 CPU mobo?

Post by littlebigman » Thu Apr 15, 2010 4:57 am

Hello

I'd like to build a...
- really quiet PC (totally fanless, or single, slowed-down 120mm fan) which
- has a PCI slot, and
- doesn't require much horsepower, and
- has en embedded x86 CPU so that I can use a regular Linux distro, but
- the whole thing (mobo + RAM + CF/DD + DIY acrylic case) shouldn't cost more than about $100-130.

At this point, it looks like the only motherboards with an embedded x86 CPU are Atom-based such as the Asus AT5NM10-I, but they're a bit too pricey for this project.

Do you know of other motherboards, even with older CPU? Size isn't an issue, so even ATX mobos are OK.

Thank you.

Well, if you don't need much power there's this VIA motherboard for $60 here.

I'm really happy with my Intel D510MO. It fits all your requirements: no fans, embedded dual-core Atom (with hyperthreading), PCI slot, low-power consumption. Ubuntu 9.10 works out of the box.

Thanks much for the tip on the Intel and Via mobos. I'll see for how much they can be had over here in Europe.
