Sony work machine....

Post by Beyonder » Wed Oct 29, 2003 8:29 pm

So, I got a sony desktop as a work machine at my new job. It's fairly quiet, so I tore the thing open today to have a looksee and also install another nic....

It's a P4-2.667 ghz processor with a gig of ram, a 120 gig maxtor drive with a two meg cache, and a passive geforce 4 mx video card. No case fans, and a power-supply that *sort* of resembles the Seasonic Tornado (same hex grid on the back, with one internal fan--although no manufacturer is listed on the label).

The major source of noise is the cpu fan--not sure what model it is, but it seems to be buried so deep in the case that it's somewhat muted. All in all, the case construction is fairly thoughtful, surprisingly, although my silent rig at home is worlds better. On boot, strangly enough, all the fans fire up and it's startlingly loud; however, within ten seconds they all ramp down to a more tolerable setting. DVD-ROM and DVD writer drives open *very* quietly, but are *very* loud once they start spinning....

Overall, pretty quiet. Nice to see that manufacturers are at least trying to keep things reasonable. It would have been nice if it'd had some sort of ducting coupled with the power supply, but other than that, it was pretty well executed.
