Dell Vostro 430 MT

Post by quietlife » Thu May 27, 2010 5:07 am

Hi, just saw this spec for a Dell on their site:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-860 (2.80GHz, 8MB)
English Genuine Windows® 7 Professional (32 BIT)
Memory: 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Single Channel
Hard Drive:Drive 500GB Serial ATA non Raid (7200 Rpm)
Video Card: Graphics : 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® G310*
Base: Vostro Desktop 430
Enhanced Service Packs: 3Yr Basic Warranty - Next Business Day

All for £686 - not bad!

Though the GPU would probably need to be upgraded - Dell's upgrade is £120 extra - if I took out the G310 and put in my own card, then that'd make the warranty void in theory.

The remaining question is how quiet this machine is..?

Nah, it won't void the warranty. Just put the old GPU back in if you need to RMA. Quiet is another matter. How much would a similar custom build cost ya?

The Vostros are basically just white-boxes except with a shinny black front. There's nothing special about them. Dell does do some things right from a quiet PC perspective, but even on their best PCs they're still not great. And the Vostros are not their best. So if the fans aren't outright loud, they'll at least be very clicky and it will have a lot of hard drive seeking noise.
