Do I need 50mm fan? Need advice!

Post by abd08 » Fri Jun 18, 2010 10:48 am

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have an Akasa Crypto case with 80W PSU (external brick).

I thought the whole point of having the external brick was that I wouldn't have a PSU fan, but they put a 50mm in there cooling the DC-DC board.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of PSU, and does anyone know if I can get rid of the fan? I want to have a single 92mm or 120mm fan above the ZOTAC Atom heatsink only ideally.

Thanks!
Raj

It's a nice looking case, but that fan does seem silly. Still, it is probably there to keep something in the dc/dc board from overheating. Maybe try it w/ the fan off and see if it stays stable. Or just find a way to slow the fan down so it's not noisy. Link to Akasa case.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the advice! I'll stress test w/Prime95, 3DMark, memtest etc. and see what happens. Given I'll be streaming most content/getting it off a NAS, I'm going to have to assume the HDD and BD-ROM won't be an issue.

Thanks!!!
Raj
