It would be great to be able to source the material that heatpads are made from. I mean the material that looks like a rubber compound that is often under stock CPU/Heatsink combinations that conducts heat. I want to use it for the underside of hard drives and other uses (not CPU's of course). So it needs to be about 1/8" thick at least.

You can buy thermal transfer tape at electronics shops. For example here in Oz my local is Jaycar which sells this stuff: linky

3M make a range of products, so you should be able to source one of these to suit. Here's a pdf of those: linkky

Is that the stuff you're talking about?

Interesting note on the shelf-life of this thermal tape in that pdf:

3M pdf wrote:
"Shelf Life: 2 years from date of manufacture when stored at room temperature (22 C) at 50% RH"

Kinda makes you wonder how long it's rated for when subjected to 40-60 C on a fairly regular basis while system is in operation.....

A generic, plain looking pad I recently bought had some grains in it, silverish looking. While it is more probable that this is a marketing gimmick (like those special particles in washing powders), there still might be some merit to it, and who know, maybe this is sth better than good ol' silicon.
