I have a Maxtor 6Y120L0 drive and according to DTemp AAM is supported and enabled. The recommended value is C0h (medium acoustic emanation level) but the Current AAM Value is FEh (maximum performance).

How do I change this setting to the most quiet setting? I looked at Maxtor's site and can only find Powermax, Maxblast and loads of Fireball utilities. Nothing mentions AAM so I was wondering exactly what I need.

Cheers,
Cams

Try Hitachi power tool. It worked for me.

My experience with Hitachi ftool with maxtor dm+9 drives was that the accoustic management was either completely on or off.

Go to the maxtor site and search for "amset." It's a command prompt utility that offers off, some or alot (I forget the exact parameters.)

Amset greatly reduced the seek noise on my 80g maxtor pata drive - using the /quiet setting.

The Amset utility worked, and how! What a difference it has made, and to think I've had this HD for around six months and didn't even know about the /quiet setting until today. Seek noise has been reduced considerably to the point where I could probably keep things as they are rather than going for an enclosure of some sort. Many thanks!

So is my PC silencing quest now finally at an end? I think it might just be!

What about the whine of your Maxtor drive? Doesn't it drive you crazy? That constant whine. Penetrating into your brain endlessly. On and on and on.....

Not all Maxtors whine. The model I have DM+9 definitely don't whine or the whine is inaudible over low fan noise, but it has a loud seek compared to quiet drives.

What ez2remember said. I also have the DM+9 and it doesn't whine at all. Seek noise is loud but now much less so after applying the /quiet AAM setting.

As for my WD 60GB, that thing's whine really does get to me. An incredibly noisy drive.

Don't let Hutter's pathetic attempt to rain on your success bother you. He's obviously obsessed with Samsung drives. Rumor is that those close to him are looking into a counseling "solution."

But Ralf does have a point there, as almost everyone here found out. You eliminate one noise source, another thing that didn't bother you previously starts getting on your nerves. It's not a quest, it's a curse...

And if you ever get your own system quiet enough, you start eyeing other people machines. Counselling may not be such a bad idea. Maybe we need a SPCR Anonymous club or something.

Ralf I love how you put that! Planting the seed of discontent.

BTW, nice new point in your sig too (i.e. "Smokey SoCal" hehe)... :D :D

Yeah, that's all I was getting at, in a fairly obtuse way.

Do you think about ways to silence your refrigerator? Do you glare angrily at people who dare speak to you? Is MUTE the most worn button on your TV remote? You might be a silencer...

You mean like a web forum where recovering silencers can share their experiences, draw support from each other and say things like:

Yesterday... I ducted.

I had been thinking about it for a while, planning and drawing. Not a day went by without thoughts of air flow. It's especially hard when you go outside, feel the wind in your face. But every day I put the drawings away, holding on, fighting the obsession. One day at a time. Until yesterday... Yesterday I walked by the hardware store and I saw the pipe in the window and... I just couldn't help myself. I went into the store, bought the pipe, and I ducted all night. And most of this morning. My temps are down by three degrees and my PSU is now my loudest component. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

No, but I did get the quietest model I could find, and now it's starting to bug me. The noise... the noise...
