Macbook pro's 2011

More popular than ever, but some are still very noisy.

Macbook pro's 2011

Post by Jeroenlol » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:00 pm

Hei all,

Just wanted to inform you for those who might be intrested in buying the new MBP from 2011, it runs louder then the previous 2010 models.

The MBP's I tested all had a Toshiba hard drive wich wasnt as quiet as the WD hard drives.

Once you replace it with a SSD you really have a neat quiet laptop though :)

So far I haven't ran into any heat problems with the I7 either.

Looked at the Air in both sizes and a 13" MBP for the mrs today at the Apple store in Omaha. Too much noise in the room around the iPad 2 to notice the difference. Thanks for the info!

I had a new MBP for about 10 days, but ended up returning it. It ran so warm along the back left corner that it was warning up the qwerty row, making my fingers tingle if I was playing a game o.O. Also noisy as heck, even compared to my 2008 Alienware laptop! I was really quite disappointed, it being my first trip into the Mac-world.

Yep. Anandtech's review sums it up:

"There's no way to get around it—if you're going to be using these systems to anywhere near their potential, they are going to get significantly warmer than last year's. Also, as a result, the new systems are noisier. Fans are more likely to spin up and given how small they are, they are quite audible. If this is a deal breaker for you, the best advice I can give you is to wait for Ivy Bridge."

I have the 11" MBA. It is almost silent. Depending on how your hearing is. It's fan is making an incredibly high pitched noise, almost like a whistling, but it's very feint. At least for me. I'm 30 years old, high frequency hearing should still be good, but a 16-year old might perceive that louder.

But it is the quietest laptop I've ever (almost not) heard.

Makes the current crop of left-over/refurb Core2Duo machines look even more appealing with the lower price. Might be time to pull the trigger on one for the Mrs.

My 2010 macbook compare to the 2011 model is soooo much more quieter, no upgrade for me this year.

Ah, i was thinking of upgrading my i5 2.53 17" to this year's model. Guess not need to consider it now and just go with a SSD upgrade (Vertex 3! ). Playing civ 5 makes the 2010 model quite loud already, i can't imagine it can get louder with this year's model.

Probably it's time for apple to redesign the macbook unibody to facilitate heat issues.

I picked up a Core2Duo 2.4 machine at a local store after it received a $200+ markdown. It sits on her lap and does not heat up like the old Dell Core2Duo machine did. I am happy
