Nexus Real Silent 120mm Case Fan

I've got two questions regarding the use of this fan.

1. I was under the impression the Nexus Real Silent 120mm Case Fan could be run simply by connecting it to the motherboard. However, it does not run at all if I simply connect the 3 pin directly to the chassis or pwr fan connectors. Any ideas?

2. If I connect it to the power supply as well as the cha_fan on the board it will run, but only at the fixed speed. If I connect it this way is there any way to undervolt the fan?

I'm using an ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Motherboard.

This is odd, your motherboard's manual says that the 4th pin on the chassis header is +5v, not PWM.

Which are your current settings into the Hardware Monitor BIOS section?

Bios settings:
The CPU Q-Fan function is enabled and set to silent mode.
The chassis Q-Fan function is enabled and set to silent mode.

With the motherboard and cpu both at 30c the nexus is spinning at 1100RPM (plugged into both the power supply and the motherboard).

When just plugged into the motherboard with the motherboard temperature at 32c the nexus does not spin at all. While the CPU fan (scythe mugen) is spinning at 600rpm with the cpu at 34c.

Strangely, if plugged into the pwr fan connection it runs, but of course at around 1200rpm still. Yet if plugged into cha_fan2 it doesn't run at all.

I'm starting to suspect this is an issue with the motherboard. I really don't want to be forced into the drawn out process of attempting to get it replaced.

Just run it at 9 or 10 volts and move on.

Set Q-Fan to Manual mode and change the two temps values to try the fan start (or change the profile from "Silent" to a more aggressive one).

At first sight it would look like Q-Fan is preventing the Nexus to start, due to the already low temps: in fact the power fan header isn't Q-Fan (Fan Xpert) controlled (AFAIK), and your Nexus starts.

Alternatively you may use SpeedFan to manually start the fan through the Advanced tab of its Configure window.

Well I changed the bios settings around quite a few times, but the fan didn't budge. And the cpu fan reacts to any changes I make to it in speedfan, but not the chassis fan.. ?

I let the motherboard get up to 38c and it still didn't kick in, so I'm thinking I'll just have to go buy and rely on a fanmate or something similar.

Troubleshooting time...

By plugging the molex power and having the fan spin at 100% (1200 RPM) you have proven that the fan works under power. By plugging the 3 pin connector to the CHA and PWR fan connections you have proven that either those two connectors are not providing enough power or that the 3 pin connector on your fan is broken. You have a fan spinning on your CPU_Fan header.

Plug the Nexus into the CPU_FAN header and see if it spins. If it doesn't then the 3 pin connector on the fan is broken.

Also - plug the cpu cooler fan into your PWR or CHA fan headers to see if it spins - this is to test if they are providing any power at all.
