Cuda V quieter than the Cuda IV!

Post by Jolt » Thu Oct 17, 2002 2:11 pm

Haven't seen that anyone has posted this already, so here I go:

SR has reviewed the Cuda V, check this out:

http://www.storagereview.com/articles/2 ... 23A_6.html

The Cuda V is actually 3dBA quieter than the Cuda IV!

(and that's the ATA100 version, hope the SATA version will be as quiet too ;) )

[edit: it's actually 3dBA, not 3dB as I wrote before]

That is superb! I just read the article. It appears my near future computers will all have Cuda Vs! Those Seagate engineers are awesome. I think the competitors are going to have a tough time competing with Seagate in the noise arena.

My current 2 40gig Cuda IVs running in Raid 0 feel blazing fast to me! I'm always the first to enter way ahead of others when playing online games during map changes. Hopefully, the stock Cuda Vs run great in Raid configs.

Woah, I didn't expect that. 3dB means it's mathematically only 50% as loud, and noticeably quieter in practice. Great stuff.

But this is a 120 Gb V compared to a 80 Gb IV - the 40 Gb IV is the quietest drive there is, isn't it?

I'd like to see know how the 80/120 V's compare to the 40 Gb IV - anyone got an idea?

80 and 40 should be the same because they still use only one platter (but in csae of the 80 both sides of the platter are used). The only extra noise would come from the r/w heads, but I don't know how much extra noise that would give .. I doubt it'll be too much though.

So unless I'm completely mistaken, the 60/80 gig Vs should be just about as quiet as the 40 gig IVs.

Anyone out there with first-hand experience (or is there a review anywhere)?

My first hand experience was: 120 GB V noisier than 40GB V

The 80 GB Barracuda V is a dual platter (triple head), the 60 GB Barracuda V and 40 GB Barracuda IV are both single platter (dual head). IMO, you should expect the single platter (of the same model) to be quieter than dual platter (at idle).

I was considering this myself but I decided to wait for the Barracuda 7200.7 drives which should be faster and have a 80GB single platter model available.

Confusingly, the Seagate spec sheet for the 7200.7 has the single and dual platter drives at the same noise level. :?

jojo4u,

Thanks for posting the links, but AFAICS there is no mention of the subjective, real-life noise levels of the 40 GB Barracuda IV vs the 60/80 gig Vs (specifically).

Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Just to re-iterate, the 80 GB V is noisier than the 60 GB V.

Ah yes of course, I think that score has been settled now. My bad. :-)

As for the IV-40 vs the V-60, according to the Seagate webpage the former is specified at 2,0 <unit>, whereas the latter is specified at "<2,4". The V-80 and the IV-60 are 2,5 or 2,8 (or something to that effect).

So most likely a V-60 would be the best choice, if you were getting a new drive today...

I still think it's quite amazing for the V to be quieter than the IV. I *cannot* (and I really mean that I can't!) hear my IV in my Epia!

Just to straighten things out - the only reference I have seen to the V being even more silent than the IV is the Storagereview.com article that compares a 120 gig V to a 80 gig IV. The latter is allegedly quite a bit louder than the 40 gig IV.

I think the reason for this confusion is that we don't discriminate between different drive sizes. It is a lot easier to talk about the Seagate Barracuda V full stop, but it makes things difficult when you find out that size DOES matter... :-)

Confused...

I have had two 40 gb cuda IV runing raid for a long while and bought a 80 gb cuda IV for a while ago (cuda V not out then). My opinion is that the 80 did not add to much to the ambient hd-noice in my case. It's noice disadvantage to the 40's is barely noticable. But it is just me talking. Some people here seems to have even more hands on info with both IV and V. I havent heard any of the V in real life.

Can anyone make a (subjective) list of all the cuda drives in respect to noice? Since no other drive is in the same league i guess they are not in intrest here. The intresting part is where IV and V pass each other.

Basic list would look like: (quiet -> loud)

Barracuda IV 40 gb
...
...
Barracuda V 120 gb
