Mega Zalman ZM-80 for CPU's ?

Hi Guys !

Just read the Zalman VGA Heatpipe article (thnx Brett !)

for a truly promising project hit me:

Why not make the same for the cpu ?
Now, I know it's not exactly a new idea, but I haven't seen this EXACT idea-even as vaporware-anywhere.

So, here goes...
What if we took a good sized HS, drilled some holes into it, and attached a few (sealed ?) pipes
(the same as ZM-80), that will attach to a bigger, higher (case external ?) HS for a totally passive solution ?

The general idea here is:
BIG cold hs+FEW pipes (with attention to thermal distribution) = higher dissipation ability (like putting together a few HS,
kind of like Thermacore Therma-Sink+Therma-Base (width wise but without the vapor chambers

).

Is that the holy grail of SILENCE of what (assuming it works

)

Of course, it would need some support to hold it up and to stop it from tearing off the socket\parts of the motherboard out

Sadly, I'm not that good with cutting\welding\modding etc but it'll probably be a nice challenge for somebody
(*cough* MikeC *cough*) to build...

BTW, This is my 1st post so be gentle if this sounds stupid\under informed\not well thought of... (*sigh*)

that will (hopefully) give the manufactuerers\resllers (a big thumbs up for http://www.siliconacoustics.com for their participation in the forum-I'm actually gonna buy some stuff from them next week !) and the users a common stage to interact.

hey poizen, sounds like a great idea but from what is sounds like, i think that the shuttle mini cube PCs use a similar idea with a heatsink on the CPU with heatpipes leading to a radiator/fan combo that expells the heat.

Like WantMy...said, the Shuttle heat pipe for their SFF systems is exactly what you're describing. Take a look at http://www.overclockers.com/articles651 for a good pic of it. That particular HSF is running in my Shuttle system now and it does an EXCELLENT job of reasonably quiet cooling.

A Korean company called C-system offers fanless heat pipe solutions for CPU's and graphics cards. Check it out:

Unfortunately, the English on their website is quite poor, so the information is hard to follow. Also, the shipping charges are quite high. However, if you want a heat pipe for you CPU, you don't exactly have much choice.
