Internal enclosure suggestions wanted.

Post by Fire-Flare » Wed Jul 27, 2011 3:58 pm

I'm using a pair of 2.5" Hitachi HTS543232A7A384 drives, they have low vibration and idle noise, but their seek noise is annoying.

To this end I'm looking for a product that will absorb the airborne noise and hopefully cost less than $30. (US)

A few solutions have come up in my searches, but real-world experience from someone looking for silence rather than cooling or decoupling would be appreciated.

The Scythe Quiet Drive 2.5, review here. You should be able to find it online for less than $30.

In addition to the products linked to in ces' post, there is also the Nexus Drive-A-Way. I used this to silence a Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB with excellent results. It virtually eliminated airborne noise, although it did nothing to reduce vibration. I had it resting on foam to fix that problem.

A minor issue: I needed to fiddle around and fit the cover on loosely. If it was on too tight then the airborne noise would become audible. Once it was adjusted right, it worked beautifully. :)

Alright, I have another question.

I'm getting mixed impressions about suspension, will a tight sandwich system like the NoVibes affect seek noise if it's plainly audible while the drive is lying on a pillow?
