I would like to thank you all for posting information here

I was planning to buy an APC Back-UPS of somewhere between 400VA and 900VA*, and had not really thought about the noise yet.
- do all your APC units have the possibility to connect to your computer with USB or UTP or something, to tell it to shut off in case of power failure?
My computer is on 24/7, so there is a large chance I will not be there to turn it off. My main reason to buy a UPS is simply to prevent broken hardware or lost data, I don't need to have my computer continuously during a (long) power failure, I just need my computer to shut off safely

- Has anyone tried if putting some foam around your UPS helps against the sound it makes when it is not running the fan? (Without blocking any significant ventilation openings of course.)
There is of course a small chance the unit depends on it's outer casing for some cooling, and will run hot enough to start the fan because of the foam, which would be horrible, but we will never know without trying it first

*Something like 700VA should be enough to run
this C2D+4870+10xHDD system for 5 minutes, right?
